Ray keeps one of Walt’s feathers as a bookmark. It’s pressed between the yellowing pages of a copy of Ender’s Game that Ray thinks might be older than he is, and there’s something comforting about this soft golden piece of Walt holding his spot.

If Ray was Nate, he’d say there was some sort of bullshit poetry to this. Something about having a piece of Walt where he needs him most (in a way that isn’t sexual, because the place where Ray wants and needs Walt most isn’t something he’s supposed to bring up in polite conversation but he still sometimes does for the hell of it) and keeping him close.

Not that Walt isn’t usually curled up on the couch with Ray when he reads, playing Skyrim quietly with Ray’s feet in his lap. Walt is always close when Ray needs him, is ever present even when Ray is pissed the fuck off when Ray wants nothing to do with his stupid face and giant wings.

If Ray is entirely honest, which has been known to happen, the reason he uses Walt’s feather as a bookmark is none of those things. It doesn’t mean anything at all. It just happened to be within arm’s reach when he needed something to mark his spot, and it’s kind of pretty to look at when he reaches a boring passage, something to toy with when he’s too ADHD to pay attention but too invigorated to look away.

Really though, if Ray thinks about it, he just wants to know how the fuck it looks to other people that he’s got an angel feather as a bookmark when most people can’t see them as anything more than a shadow out of the corner of their eyes.

Ray’s tried to bring this up to Walt, but Walt usually shuts him up with kisses, and well, that’s a good enough excuse in Ray’s book as well. The best, maybe, but he’s reserving judgment until it gets a hand down his pants or a mouth on his dick.
