[ Character Name ]: Janice Rand [ Race ]: Human [ Rank ]: Yeoman [ Job/Position/Department ]: Personal Yeoman to Captain Kirk. [ Character Background/Description ]: The Rands were a tight-knit family, both parents as dedicated to to their exploration of the outer planets as they were to their children - Janice, Ben, and Sirri. They spent most of their time traveling the galaxies in a modest ship, Janice choosing to spend her time painting and reading about the different types of art on every planet, while her brothers tried to tag along with their parents while they worked. Life was simple for them, they weren't wealthy by any means, but comfortable, and even after more or less growing up on a ship together, the Rand kids got along better than most siblings would being in such close quarters.
Everything changed though the day that their warp engines gave out without warning. They had to travel three years at sub-light speed to get to the nearest planet, with very limited supplies and a powerful need to stay planetside for a while, and reground themselves. They weren't given the chance too, not when they had to sell their ship for money and were forced into slavery until they could afford to live on Sawouere using their own means. The family was split up - Janice's parents working for two separate families while the three kids all stuck together. Two years went by before they could make their escape to a refugee camp, and that was where Janice met a Starfleet officer for the first time, and decided that was what she wanted to do with her life. She enlisted at age 20, choosing to go into Yeoman training.
Janice now is fresh out of Starfleet, assigned to the USS Enterprise to be the yeoman of the new Captain of the ship - James T. Kirk. While her first time being aboard a starship intimidates her, there's very little in the 'verse that could stop her from doing her job, and doing it well. Her orders are always top priority, no matter what they may be.In order to distract herself from her nerves of serving on such a well-known ship, she tends to drown herself in her paperwork, using the stacks of PADDs on her desk as a means of escaping for a little while. She's learning to open up more though, even if she'd rather spend most of her day taking care of business and making sure everything is in order for the captain.
She's definitely not only about work though, she also has a pretty optimistic mindset, and doesn't hesitate to make silly jokes when she's with her friends on the ship. Most of Jan's friends are people she met while at the academy, but she is slowly learning to make new friends with the crew members on board. She's happiest when everyone else is happy, as when people are being treated fairly, with respect. Janice won't stand by and watch if she thinks someone is being mistreated, and her real strength shows when she feels she needs to mediate or help solve a problem amongst her peers. Yeoman doesn't translate to "doormat", and while she'll listen to the Captain's every word, you can bet that she'll be very less likely to take orders from anyone else.

[ Journal Entry Sample ]: Dear diary--
No, that sounds so silly. So. Let's try again.
Yeoman Janice Rand's log; entry one.
I'm still trying to figure out exactly why I of all people need to start keeping a log, but I'm just going to roll with it and see how it goes. Um. I'm up early today because I'm supposed to be a part of the landing party for today's mission, and to be perfectly honest I'm pretty nervous. It's not the first time I'm going out, but the planet has been known to be a little hostile towards Starfleet officers, despite them being a member of the Federation. I guess they think we're only going to be there to boss them around, even if it's nothing like that. Either way, despite my nervousness for the planet itself, I am happy to be getting off of the ship for a while.
Now that I'm up though, I'm wondering what I'm going to do with my extra time. There's always work to be done but--
OH, oh duh, I need to wake the Captain! I knew there was a reason I gave myself an extra--!
-- RAND OUT BYE!
[ Log/Third Person Sample ]: Janice was sure it was cliche, but of all the things to do on the ship, sitting in the observation deck while she sorted through schedules and paperwork was her favorite way to spend her time. Especially when they were traveling at warp. At first the blur of passing planets, moons, and who knew what else only made her nervous, but after a few months on the Enterprise she was learning to appreciate the effect that moving at warp speed had on the space around them. The windows, after a while, became a huge canvas that she could just watch and use to distract herself from everything that was stressing her out that day. The openness of the observation deck was a nice change from the busy corridors and the bridge, a mini escape from it all. She loved her job, really loved it, but sometimes it did get a little overwhelming.
And that's where she was now, sitting in her favorite chair at the far right of the deck, three PADDs stacked on the arm of the chair she wasn't leaning on while she absently flipped through a number of different documents she had to sort out and get to the appropriate departments. Engineering, Engineering, Medical, Medical, Medical, Engineering, Communications, Communications... The tedious task of labeling each memo was starting to take it's toll, and she closed her eyes for all of four seconds before she felt someone rest their hand on her shoulder, and she jolted to attention, nearly knocking the PADDs onto the floor.
"Not falling asleep on the job, are you?"
[ Comments ] optional: Ahah, so I took her history from here, which... none of this is mentioned on the show, and the whole slavery thing sounds a little bookey to me, but I kind of want to play with that since it is canon to the novels. Mostly just having her worry about her brothers while she's out on Enterprise, learning to actually trust people again, that kind of thing.
