Persona 4 is an RPG known for, among other things, introducing a gay character and a trans character only to treat them like absolute shit. The anime adaptation is worse.

On Tumblr, a post is made about the week's episode. (Post contains images containing homophobic dialogue.) The poster points out that the scene, though played for laughs, isn't ( Read more... )

Yeaah, that's why I've been reluctant to catch up on the anime.

(On the other hand--erm, Naoto's trans status is up for debate?)

The Bathhouse was handled even worse, if you could believe it.

Oh, I can believe it. The show's probably trying way too hard to be the anti-Persona -trinity soul- by being All Slapstick All The Time. Persona 4 is more cheerful than other Atlus titles, but it's nowhere near as irreverent as the anime makes it out to be.

... Yyyeah during the boss battle, there's this bit where Shadow Kanji releases ... some ... mysterious sticky substance all over the floor and just in general they played up the camp aspect of that dungeon to such an extent that when Kanji actually faced him and he had the whole talk about being "scared shitless of being rejected" it just ... feels really disingenuous.

And given that I actually cried at that scene in the game, it was kind of like.

DUDE READING THE CAPS OF THOSE LINES MADE ME CRY BUT IN FULL CONTEXT IT DIDN'T EVEN WORK there is something seriously wrong here.

lol straight people

I still wonder if all of these 'gay friends' actually exist or if they actually mean 'my gay coworker/neighbor/other acquaintance who I occasionally say hello to'

I'd hate to think that I'm somebody's gay friend that they use as an excuse to be an asshole. Especially if I barely know them.

Whenever I hear "my *insert group* friend," I assume either what you said or "my gay friend who I discussed sexuality with and now refuses to return any of my phone calls or acknowledge me on the street."

And that's why I watched one episode of the P4 anime and then gave up on it. :|

Are most people really afraid of sharing a tent with a friend of the opposite sex? Maybe being a congoer just broke me, but I've slept in the same bed as my straight male friends and not had a single issue with it.
