a while ago i posted something that said something like people who aren't naturally clever, who just have the ability to do loads of work/revision, shouldn't do well in exams, or something. then everyone told me off. but it is annoying when people say "oh, so and so is so clever" when she's not, she just works her arse off. hardworking, maybe, but ( Read more... )

I dont think hteres anything wrong with people working realy hard to get high grades, but I think the problem witht he current school system is that it is so geared to exams that by learning stuff you can do extremely well, no real background knowledge or insight is tested. In an ideal world the highest grades would be obtainable only by being really intelegent & working hard at something they found interesting, not by doing either as it stands at the moment.
You are totaly wrong about people applying htemselves and practicing actually.Intelligent people tend to do 'accademic' stuff as recreation in general,, & yeah if you read a lot & stuff you are likely to do well. But I blaggeed my way through all my essay based exams by being naturaly good at it, & a friend who got stoned all day & never did a stroke of work got top grades in science subject by turning up occasionally.SO If your brain works that way its realy easy to do nothing & do well without any practice.

Id say that more of the problem with geekiness, which Ive incidentaly always more classed as down to lack of social skills than someone who works too hard, is if htey go to a realy good university they cant keep up when the work becomes less formulaic, or yeah, get a life & loose interest.

Revision for your a levels probably helps a bit though, just dont start too early or you'll be realy bored of it by the end & not bother.
