Me: So I need to write an essay on why I wanna work for the government.

Simply put, I want to serve my country. As a young person living in America, there is a certain responsibility I have to ensure our country’s future. Yet despite our role as the leaders of tomorrow, my generation is extremely apathetic towards politics and social issues. This only reinforces my notion to get involved in the process of what makes this country so great. Someone has to step up to the plate.
I have an enormous amount of respect for those who serve this country in the armed forces. And while I think they provide an invaluable service, that kind of work doesn’t appeal to me in the way that working for the state department does. I want to see the ways in which policy is created and enacted. The United States is the global superpower, and no other process than that which shapes the American government’s policy has such gravity in today’s world.
Specifically, the Foreign Service Institute interests me for several reasons. I’ve done a considerable amount of traveling throughout Europe and Latin America and I’m continually fascinated by the American influence in different countries. The political, economic, and cultural reach of this country is just staggering. Moreover, I’m passionate about learning languages, and I would love to go into a field where I could utilize that skill. I’m slightly proficient in French, I’ve learned some Japanese over the years, and I’m currently taking Arabic. I plan on continuing my study of Arabic throughout the rest of college.
I believe this internship would be an amazing avenue to a leadership position within the government. And for someone like myself, who hopes to have a long career in government service, this internship would assuredly remain an invaluable experience.
