Who will you run to when it all falls down//Who's gonna pick you world up off the ground//who's gonna take away the tears you cry//who's gonna love you baby as good as I
Noah stood just outside the security gate at the airport, nervously jumping from foot to foot. He hadn't been to work for a couple days. After working nearly every day since moving, he was finally taking some time to breathe. He'd rather be working, but he also knew he still had a lot of unpacking to do.
His couple days away from work were showing in his appearance. He was scruffier than usual, and he was more than happy to be lounging around in black jeans and a gray sweater. He chewed on his lip, his fingers pulling at the hair on his chin, as he tried to see over all of the people coming towards him.
He heard a squeal and recognized it instantly.
"NoahNoahNoahhhhhh!!"
His arms fell to his side and his lips turned up into a grin as he watched
a young woman launch herself from the crowd and in his direction. He planted his feet and opened his arms, grabbing her tightly. "Jenny," he greeted into her ear warmly. He kissed the side of her head and hugged her.
"You look like shit."
He laughed. "Good to see you, too."
Jenny pulled back just enough to look his face over. Her hands went up to either cheek and she held his head for a moment. She sighed. "I've missed you, big brother."
"I've missed you, too," he said, dropping a kiss on her forehead. "Come on." He moved and arm around her shoulders and stole her duffel bag, throwing it over his other shoulder. He guided her for the door. "Welcome to hell."
"Nice place," Jenny nodded. She tossed her sunglasses on the nearest surface as the two walked through Noah's new home. He smirked and dropped her bag on the couch.
"I haven't done the rat-fest style in years. You know that."
"Mmm, always in style," she grinned over her shoulder at him. She turned and moved on through the large house. "God, Noah. What the fuck do you need all of this room for?
EvilBitch isn't moving out here, is she?"
"Nah, EvilBitch has a penthouse with YuppyManWhore."
"Riiight," she nodded, her fingers running against the white railing as she moved upstairs.
He hopped the stairs, both feet at the same time, behind her. "Talk to
Lex lately?"
"Hmm? Yea, we talked last night. I told her you demanded my presense. She wants to know what's wrong and expects me to call and spill tonight." Noah snorted and kept following her as she explored.
"What makes her think something is wrong?"
"Something isn't?" She plopped herself down on his bed and pulled a pillow into her lap, looking up at him with innocent eyes. He rolled his own and leaned back against the dresser nearby, arms crossed.
"You two are extremely nosy pests."
"What's wrong Noah? I know you wanted me to visit, but calling me and asking me to fly here right away? What's that?"
He sighed and moved his eyes to meet hers. He shrugged just slightly and kept quiet for awhile before speaking. "I lost a patient, Jen." His fingers moved up through his hair. "Two fucking months here, and I lost a patient already."
"That sucks," she said gently. "But...you're a doctor. It-"
"It happens. I know. But..." he shook his head. "She was eight. Her name was Hannah Gordon and she'd been sick over half of her life." His eyes watched the carpet. "I don't care how long I do this...losing a kid...always fucking sucks."
"Well...maybe when it doesn't suck so hard anymore, you'll know it's time to stop."
He nodded and quietly thought her words over for a long time. His head came up after awhile and he looked at her. She looked back and gave him a wide smile. He couldn't help but smile back. "On the bright side, as soon as you blab to Alexis, she'll be baking goodies and sending them to me."
Jenny laughed. "They better get here before I leave."
"Who said I'd share?" He frowned and dug into his dresser for a shirt to throw at her. She laughed and threw the pillow back at him. He caught it. "You know I have no qualms with kicking your ass, Jennifer."
"Sure you don't have qualms," she shot back. "Doesn't mean you can actually do it." She stuck her tongue out, then jumped and ran from the room.
"I'm not going to chase you," he called after her.
"What? Bones hurting you old man?"
He grinned to himself and shook his head, then ran after her.
