I watched the Dark Knight last weekend and was completely blown away with how the story worked out and the depth of the film. It relates so closely to my own particular philosophy that I was astounded and it will certainly be one of my all time favorites.
We are all human, each of us has flaws and a past history that influences how we think and behave, and it is a struggle to defeat that influence and be true to ourselves. Our ideals and morality today should guide us, rather than actions and events of the past. Holding onto those ideals is tough and not always the popular thing to do, as shown beautifully in The Dark Knight. Doing the Right Thing is not always the thing that makes our own life easier, or gains us love and respect. It is separate from outside opinions and follows the objective truth, that we can all see and follow if we have the courage to do so.
And it is very easy to write those words and talk about doing the right thing. But it is a vast difference between talking about it and doing it. Hearing/reading the words that others say and claim is all very well. But in the end their actions tell us what they truely mean. Their actions that define the person they really are and our actions define who we are. Are you really the person you portray yourself to be? I try to be. I am not afraid of who I am and I readily admit I do make mistakes, I am influenced by events I am involved in and that occur around me. When I find out or am shown I am wrong I will adjust accordingly to get myself back onto the true path.
It is terribly sad to see those who claim to follow the truth and demand it from others fail to see how they are not heading their own words. And unfortunately, those of us who hold those people up to the standards they set themselves are likely to be at best disappointed, at worst very hurt when the facts come to light. When you make claims to other people, when you promise them things, even if it is just simple friendship, be honest. It is the right thing to do. We are all capable of that and being a hero in our own story.
