So this weekend there were elections. The results were...mixed, shall we say? In the good news, my cousin, who was running for chief of police in his town, will be progressing on to the November runoff with a good chance of winning. In the bad news, the proposed state constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between one man and one woman and forbidding the state from providing the same rights and privileges to any non-marriage partnership (e.g. live-in partners and homosexual partners) passed. I knew it probably would, but I'm still severely disappointed. It gave me quite a lot of satisfaction to vote against it, though.

Then, to cheer myself up, I watched Maurice. God. I love this movie. I want this movie so so so badly. It's just so pretty! And I have never quite understood the appeal of Hugh Grant until now. Yeah. First off, this is the time period he was obviously meant for. Second, he has about ten times the chemistry with Maurice as he ever did with Bridget Jones. Speaking of Maurice (pronounced, apparently, as 'Morris' if you're British), he was such a cutey! Adorable. Just, adorable. But good heavens, no facial hair for either one of them, please. I thought the romance between Maurice and Scudder was a bit too quick, but, still, they were quite cute. It was nice to see a return to the boyish enthusiasm and idealism that Maurice had back in college. (Also, Scudder's accent reminded me of Sam Gamgee, so every time he bagged a rabbit I'd be thinking "Gonna make Master Frodo a nice coney stew now.")

And then I read Song of the Beast by Carol Berg. Limyaael has recced her before (but for a later trilogy). This was apparently one of her first books, and it shows in places--my romance is pasted on!!1!--but is, on the whole, fairly satisfying. Not great, but it kept me reading. I see enough promise to want to pick up her trilogy. And she's a Rice alum, as it turns out, and a fellow math major.

Also, on Friday I got in the boots I'd ordered and my Kinks cd. Loving the cd to bits and pieces. (The boots are nice too.) "All Day and All of the Night!" "Dedicated Follower of Fashion"! "Well Respected Man"! "Plastic Man"! "Lola"! "Victoria"! "Apeman"!
