Grimmjaw returned to Las Noches late. He'd left Envy and Greed hours ago, but had still felt out-of-sorts and had just roamed the living world until he thought that Ulquiorra might have gone to bed. Not that he was avoiding him necessarily...he just felt a bit off, unable to really define the feeling better, even to himself.
He opened the portal near the entrance to Las Noches, hoping that the long walk back to his room might tire him out enough that he could fall asleep, not expecting to see anyone along the way.
Ulquiorra had been prowling the dull blank hallways restlessly when he felt Grimmjaw's reiatsu reappear at the entrance to Las Noches. He paused and turned in that direction, staring at the wall before him blankly. He could feel the same threads of uneasiness in the Arrancar that were present before he left, and he frowned in mild confusion. Things were back to normal. Grimmjaw should be too.
Turning again, he started for the Arrancar's location, hands in his pockets comfortably. There was no need for this. Ulquiorra would figure out what was distracting him before it got him killed on a mission for Aizen-sama.
Grimmjaw felt Ulquiorra's reiatsu approaching and sighed heavily. He knew that Ulquiorra could probably sense his odd emotional state, and knew that the smaller Espada would want to "fix" it. Espada were not allowed to have bad days, in Ulquiorra's eyes. Grimmjaw stopped walking and leaned against a wall, waiting for Ulquiorra to find him.
Ulquiorra slowed when he approached, sensing Grimmjaw's resigned irritation before he could see it on his face. He stopped before him and eyed him for a moment, but nothing appeared to be physically wrong. He wasn't even drunk. Ulquiorra had expected that much, at least.
"You never answered me earlier," he said tonelessly, watching him. He was glad none of the other Espada were so high maintenance.
"Answered what?" Grimmjaw answered, meeting Ulquiorra's eyes.
"I said you were behaving strangely. You still are. Why?"
Grimmjaw furrowed his brow. "I don't know," he lied, pushing himself off the wall and taking a step toward Ulquiorra. "I'm tired, I'm going to bed."
Ulquiorra stepped deliberately into his path. "Don't lie to me, Sexta. You need to fix whatever's wrong with you. Especially because there is no reason for it."
Grimmjaw frowned and bit back, "There's nothing wrong with me, Primera, sometimes people get angry or pissed off or upset. It doesn't mean there's something wrong with them. I'm fine, we don't need to talk about this." He stepped forward again, attempting to push past Ulquiorra.
Ulquiorra wrapped his fingers around his wrist to stop him, eyes narrowed. "Is this about the animal incident?"
Grimmjaw stopped and yanked his wrist away from Ulquiorra and was silent for a moment. "What the hell do you care?"
Ulquiorra let him, though he didn't step away. "I could ask the same of you. That's over. It's not happening again."
Grimmjaw crossed his arms in front of his chest. "I don't care. I know it won't happen again. I'm not stupid."
"Then why is it still affecting you?" Ulquiorra wanted to know. "I can't imagine what else it may be. Unless you are upset by Hinamori-dono's departure."
"I don't care about Hinamori-dono," Grimmjaw said, avoiding the question.
"Then?" Ulquiorra pressed, meeting his eyes.
Grimmjaw shook his head. "This is stupid."
Ulquiorra's eyes narrowed. "Why?"
Grimmjaw frowned. "Why do you always need to know what's bothering me?"
"Why is something always bothering you?" Ulquiorra countered. "Everything is going smoothly, with the exception of the human girl's escape. There is nothing left to bother you."
"There is not always something bothering me," Grimmjaw scowled. "And I'll be fucking fine tomorrow if you just let me go so I can go to sleep."
Ulquiorra sighed softly and looked away. "Very well." He wasn't going to argue about this; it was pointless enough as it was. Though he was curious if anything had occurred in the human world.
"Did the homunculi have anything to say, or no?"
"Have anything to say about what?" Grimm jaw asked, confused.
"Anything," Ulquiorra replied, looking at him again. "The stones. The wedding. I have not spoken with them since this morning."
Grimmjaw shrugged. "Envy mentioned something about getting you to eat cake. I dunno, nothing especially exciting." He sighed, suddenly feeling very tired. "Can I just go now? The last two days have been exhausting."
Ulquiorra couldn't argue with that. "Yes," he said softly, dismissing him. "Rest. Perhaps it will help."
Grimmjaw nodded, the uneasy feeling returning with a vengeance. "Yeah. Maybe."
Ulquiorra paused, sensing the flare in his reiatsu. "...What was that for?"
"I don't know," Grimmjaw said. He really didn't know why it was still bothering him so much. It was just Primera, and he was fine now, so why couldn't he forget the strange unfamiliar knot he'd had in his stomach when he'd realized that Ulquiorra had gone missing and that he had no way to find out where he'd gone, knowing how helpless he'd been in that state. Or the frustration and sense of urgency he'd felt when he finally had discovered Ulquiorra's location only to have both Ulquiorra and the Shinigami make it very difficult for him to just bring Primera home. Grimmjaw sighed again, shrugging. "I don't know," he repeated.
"You're lying," Ulquiorra accused, turning to regard him fully again. "If it's something to do with me, you should explain yourself rather than hide it. That doesn't work."
Grimmjaw turned back to face Ulquiorra. "Yesterday..." he began, but then stopped, trying to find a word that wouldn't sound completely ridiculous.”Yesterday...I was....concerned," he said finally.
"Concerned," Ulquiorra repeated flatly, slipping his hands into his pockets. "Because I was a panda?"
Grimmjaw frowned again. "Did you forget again? Or was it really not that big of a deal to you?"
"You're referring to my adventure in the human world?" Ulquiorra shrugged nonchalantly. "It's over now. I only remember small and blurry pieces of it. I fail to see why it concerns you, especially now."
Grimmjaw laughed sardonically. "Adventure? Well I'm glad you had a good time, then, Primera."
Ulquiorra frowned. "I was a panda. Nearly everything was entertaining. What of it?"
Grimmjaw ran a hand through his hair. "I already said. I was concerned."
"And I was concerned that you wouldn't change back from your canine form. That concern evaporated when you did. Why is yours still present?"
Grimmjaw scowled. Sometimes Ulquiorra was one of the least perceptive beings on earth. "Not concerned about that you idiot. You're fucking impossible, you know that?"
"You're being evasive," Ulquiorra said tonelessly, "and that is not what I was referring to either. The danger is over. The shinigami chose honor over harming me in that state. There is nothing left for you to be concerned about."
Grimmjaw's brow furrowed and his eyes dropped to the floor. "I was...very concerned."
"...Ah." Ulquiorra considered this for a moment. "Why?"
"I couldn't find you," Grimmjaw said simply.
"I apologize for that," Ulquiorra said, pausing briefly as he wondered how long ago he had said those words. "I was...not myself. And, I could gather from looking through those threads, not very helpful. It won't happen again."
Grimmjaw was more than a little bit shocked at Ulquiorra's response. Had he just apologized? He shook his head slowly, meeting Ulquiorra's eyes. "It's fine, whatever."
Ulquiorra's eyes narrowed. "Obviously not, or we would not be having this conversation today."
: Grimmjaw shook his head again. "No...it's fine. I just...I've never felt that way before. It was disorienting."
"I see. And it hasn't faded?" Ulquiorra wasn't sure what to do about that, or even why he was still so concerned. The danger was over. There was simply nothing else to worry about. If anything he should feel relief, not...this. It confused him.
"I don't know." Grimmjaw had been relieved to have Ulquiorra back, but the relief had been so complete that it had almost scared him. Since when did Primera affect his mood so much? He was angry at himself for getting so upset in the first place, and then for letting it affect him so much. He shook his head again. "I'll be fine. I just need sleep, I'm overtired."
"Then rest," Ulquiorra urged him again. He couldn't think of anything else to do but wait to see if Grimmjaw's uneasiness faded with a little time. "If you still feel this way tomorrow, seek me out and tell me. We will find another solution for it."
Grimmjaw nodded. "Fine." He stared at Ulquiorra for a moment longer and then nodded again, taking a few steps in the direction his bedroom was in. "Goodnight, Primera."
Ulquiorra nodded, then remembered his...nest...from before and paused, averting his eyes. "...Ah. You may want to remove those things from beneath your bed before they spoil. The bamboo, at least, is organic."
Grimmjaw smiled. "Right. Will do. Goodnight, Primera."
"Yes." Ulquiorra watched him leave, preoccupied with wondering where else, if any, he had stored the stuff.
