Oscar - The Day After

Mar 06, 2006 19:00

You know what would make my day? If one more person tells me that The Oscars are based on politics. Really. Because I don't think quite enough people have given me their "original" viewpoints on the matter and the redundancy doesn't get old AT ALL.

No shit the Oscars are political.

American life itself is political. The reason I get free food at the drive-thru instead of the frumpy librarian behind me? Politics. The slavering boy at the counter can't see that I'm probably more suited to an intellectual profession than the woman in glasses and business suit behind me because of my appearance so therefore he thinks giving me free food translates into a sex romp in the parking lot, for fuck's sake.

EVERYTHING'S POLITICAL so shut up already.

That said, allow me to add to the concentrated cacaphony of FUCK heard around LJ regarding the endless line of Oscar upsets. I think leonardpart6 said it best with this gem:

"Best Picture Crash is like saying Best Restaurant Red Lobster".

Events like these don't affect our lives, per se, but in a way...well, they kinda do. At least to those of us who are into movies. We rely on the emotional response it gives us. For the escape. The winning and losing of it.

For example: I don't give a fuck about The Superbowl, but I can see how it can have the power to trigger people off. Winning or losing -- this is what we care about. People play video games for the same reason. Video games don't truly affect your life...yet they do. Why? For the winning and losing of it and the triggering of an emotional response.

So. The Oscars. Much more losing than winning, if you want to ask me. And the emotional response it triggered was Great Big Pulsing Waves Of Angry.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

At least Narnia and The Were-Rabbit won something.
