so i went to allegra's b-day celebration on saturday. it was fun. we went to john's and got italian food and i got to see emilyn and sean normal for the first time in quite awhile. afterwards, we all hit up a karoke bar and had our own private room. needless to say, i rocked "africa" by toto, and "i want you back" by the jackson 5. after everyone left, emilyn and i stayed and nearly had to rough up the bartenders in the front room. we requested "sunrise sunset" determined to bring the house down, but they passed on us like twice, after we paid $2 to register our song. we were the two most talented people in the room, though, this wasn't a surprise to me at all. emilyn did a stunning version of "adelaide's lament" earlier in the evening. her and brainy also rocked out some quality jim steinman. all in all a wonderful time.
i bought Odessey and Oracle (the misspelling is actually the way it's spelled for the album cover)by the Zombies after downloading a few of the songs and deciding it had the potential to be really special. it is. one of the most inspired pop records i've ever heard. beautiful ballads, witty lyrics, catchy writing, and colin blunstone's gorgeous voice. it's a shame they weren't as heralded in their own time. it's a completely amazing album. almost perfect, if i might be so bold to suggest. it's orchestral chamber pop at it's finest...piano, harpsicord, strings, flute, brass, mellotron, rich multi-layered harmonies, walking basslines, organ...it's really spectacular. emilyn and i had a long discussion about how much we loved music like this. i'd really like to work with emilyn on music. i really like her lyrics and sense of melody. her songs are so captivating because they're so quaint and simple, but they're also these absurdly stark and intense little vignettes. they're direct and plain in a way that makes them forceful (sort of like a raymond carver short story, come to think of it, which is nice since we're both big fans). they're also damned catchy at times. i'm so psyched about music lately. though, this post sort of made that abundantly obvious already.
