Character Information
Name: Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear
Source Canon: Tales of the Abyss
Age: 20
Role In Canon: Major supporting character
History:
Here at the Tales wikia. She's coming from after the end of the game proper, but before the epilogue a year later, meaning that for her, two years have passed since the start of the game.
Personality:
Sometimes it can seem that Natalia is as high-strung as her bows. She is never content to be out of action, and in turn, she reacts to everything. Little details can strike a sharp chord in her. Passion fills and drives her. Offenses both great and small provoke her, be they an insult to her (awful) cooking or a true cruelty to the downtrodden. Similarly, she can become intensely caught up in great quests to save the world or in little difficulties like whether she's properly attired. She does not rein herself in. For most people, it would be very tiring to be Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear. For her, it's just life...even if sometimes it means pushing herself to extremes. That's okay. She is a creature of extremes.
For a princess, Natalia is both a great ruler and a remarkably terrible politician. She is genuinely interested in the act of governing and the welfare of her people--and indeed, all people. She dedicates herself as fiercely to this ideal as she does to all others. At the same time, though, she is borderline incompetent at the complex social maneuvering that is required in politics. It's not that she's stupid: she can easily grasp the dry facts of a situation and their nuances as well. But she tends to take people at face value unless she has some prior investment in them (in which case she'll search persistently for the good in them). Directness, sometimes to the point of bluntness, is her motif, and she assumes that this will be true of others as well. Despite her intelligence, this can manifest as gullibility. She sees no reason for people to do something as silly and pointless as make up stories and lies to trick her, so unless she has solid reason to believe she's being lied to, she'll accept the strangest things as truth, whether they were made up as a joke or invented as a more serious attempt to deceive her.
But she's not exactly naive; she knows the nature of the royal court, and it forms a great basis of her personality. All her life, Natalia has been wrapped up in formalities. Someone else might see through them and become disillusioned, or be bewildered by them and become reclusive. Natalia, however, takes them at face value in much the same way she takes people. Every "please" and "thank you" has meaning to her. Every time she speaks of duty, it is sincere. Natalia is a peculiar marvel in that way. To her, nothing is frivolous, despite the overindulgent manner in which she was raised. She apologizes sincerely for every breach of politeness she recognizes (or has pointed out to her...she can get carried away). To others, stories of knights and princesses may be empty tales. To her, they form a solid belief system. Natalia does not understand the concept of meaninglessness, of things and people not having value. Of course, this can make her seem rather eccentric sometimes--a triviality to another person might be a matter of the utmost sincerity to her.
Considering her passion and intensity, it's not exactly a surprise that Natalia often comes off as bossy and demanding, even after the years of her journey to save Auldrant and her maturation over the course of it. That's just the way she is. She'll try to temper it if someone calls her on it, because she honestly wants to be as good a queen as she can someday be, as kind a person as she can always be, but it's still there. She knows better than to expect her every whim to be catered to by now, but she still automatically takes charge if people let her. It's just that there's so much she needs to see done; she can hardly wait around and follow other people's directions. And is it such a sin that she assumes others will be as willing to sacrifice and contribute as she is?
To put it plainly, Natalia wears her heart on her sleeve, for better or for worse. Sometimes she herself doesn't even realize it. She rarely stays her tongue, because it's natural to her to speak her thoughts. Keeping things bottled up is not her way. Unfortunately, this can make her rather high-maintenance, as she requires frequent support from friends--although she's become better at recognizing this, and now she avoids relying too much on them. Furthermore, she tries to give back as good as she gets, because she truly appreciates what they do for her.
The worldview of Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear is a complex one with simple roots. She is intensely idealistic, but not in a foolish or simplistic way--it's more pure stubbornness than innocence. And her ideals do not come out of thin air. They are born from promises she has made to people, from the bond she forged with Asch when he was Luke, among others. Those ordinary encounters form seeds in her psyche that sprout into beliefs and blossom into convictions. She needs people and loves them dearly. For all her ambitions of leadership and, ultimately, her suitability to that task, she looks to her friends and loved ones for reasons to keep going--and reasons to change and grow. If she's not careful, this can be a weakness, and she knows that now. But she tries hard to make it a strength instead.
Abilities:
Natalia is very skilled in archery and able to perform both ordinary attacks and complicated "artes" with it. If pressed, she can even call upon the mystic arte of Astral Rain to imbue her arrows with holy power. Beyond that, she's also quite a capable magical healer, especially with regards to healing individuals rather than groups.

[The writing that appears on this scroll is very refined and elegant--despite the obvious passion in the words.]
To whomever it may concern,
As princess and heir to the throne of the nation of Kimlasca, I refuse to accept this absurd abduction. I demand to be returned to Baticul immediately, and I insist upon the release of all others you hold captive.
Let this not be taken as an offer to negotiate with your so-called queen as one royal to another! I will gladly conduct diplomatic talks between Kimlasca and the state of the Gardens whenever you choose to use the proper channels to open them. Until such a time, I will ally myself only with the people you have cruelly trapped here. If

--rude! Was that really necessary? If you are an instrument of my kidnapping, you should not object if I treat you a bit roughly.
My! Tell me it was not you who stripped me of my garb and dressed me so. Such fumbling vines handling my fine garments...have you not been taught manners? Perhaps that is not in the upbringing of plants. I apologize, but I must ask that you learn them now.
