does he lay awake listening to your breath worried you smoke too many cigarettes?

first of all: happy twenty-first birthday, adam.

i saw 24 hour party people last night. i was a bit disappointed despite the fact that, overall, it was excellently shot. it reminded me a lot of the scene in fight club where there is a close up on brad pitt's face while he is saying "we are the all-knowing/all-seeing" blah blah stuff. the camera starts jerking horizontally and the sound seems blown out. i liked that it was filmed this way because--and while i don't tihnk this is the sole reason why they employed that sort of cinematography--ian curtis had epilepsy and was prone to "fits" aka seizures.

i understand that the movie was intended ot be about tony wilson and manchester in the late 70s/early 80s and factory records itself, but adam and i were mutually disappointed that the movie focused largely on the happy mondays as opposed to joy division and new order, which are much more interesting stories anyway. the epilepsy, the suicide, the haunted-sounding lyrics, the idea of progression in the face of tragedy, the fact that new order just put out a new record and toured with moby, etc. i don't give a shit about the happy mondays. i was also disappointed that the movie didn't dispell the false legends surrounding ic's suicide: a) he stood on a block of ice with the noose around his neck and waited for it to melt. b) he carved a smile on his face before he hung myself. both not true. they pretty much glazed over the explosion of joy division. they play factory a few times and then all of a sudden a US tour is imminent (he died +/- 2 weeks before they were due over here).

regardless, it was a well-made movie. it just wasn't tailored to my tastes. also new order was barely mentioned.

after the movie, we headed over to the theatre district to see sonic youth. despite what joe and ryan extracted from the experience, adam and i both found them to be excellent as always. it was my 6th time seeing them--one of the best things about seeing them is that you know you will see them again: they've been rocking out for +/- 25 years and they show absolutely no signs of slowing in terms of how their discography is winding itself and the energy they continue to radiate live.

they played their usual hybrid of new stuff and sonic youth classics (drunken butterfly, candle, silver rocket, etc). i LOVE seeing them and trying to unwind the layers of sound, breaking down the elements of this entity that is so much bigger than i am.

i decided that rock and roll is and always will be my monogamous boyfriend. the finest vodka in the world is second to it.

in other news, i got my air purifier. unfortunately, the a/c and the air purifier and the computer blew the circuit or whatever and started sparking this morning. thus i am typing this in adam's room. his computer speakers are better anyway.

edit entry: my cheese claims to be good until january 2003. even unopened--2003? um.
