I'm up late doing some research for a book. A free-associative web search led me to a little slice of American History I was unfamiliar with (but on reflection makes total sense): The American Civil War Centennial Commemoration.
Troubled Commemoration by Robert J. Cook details the politicization of these historical re-enactments by both Civil Rights supporters and opponents. One could make a case that
politically incorrect LARPing galvanized the Civil Rights movement.

Also I uncovered
this article from March 25, 1973 chronicling the Wounded Knee occupation, pointing out some comical moments. The article paints the AIM activists as overzealous but ignorant Farbs, LARPing for the cameras.
Farb is my new favorite word.
