I've no problem reading sequential books, though I'll admit being burned by Isobel Carmody's Legendsong trilogy, which I've been waiting for the 3rd book since 2002. That is book 2 was published in 2002, book 3 was due in 2 years, but that was over a decade ago. I've given up on ever reading an Isobel Carmody until I can read Darkbane. The second book was 780 pages, and Darkfall about the same from memory. That's a lot of time to invest in an incomplete story arc. I know she's not my bitch (to misquote Neil Gaiman) but I can also chose to stick with authors who'll satisfy my completist nature. I want to know the rest of the story, and continued with #2 in the naive belief that #3 would be published. Sadly when I see trilogy, I expect 3 books. I think even her publisher has given up any expectation.
So, while I was home sick on the weekend, sooking about missing Ironfest, I read The Bone Season. I liked it enough to buy the next book, The Mime Order. Half way through the penny dropped that this wasn't going to complete the story arc. So I looked it up on goodreads, and yes there's a 3rd book due for publishing next year. OK. 1 year to wait is ok. Frustrating but reasonable. Then I noticed that it's a 7 book series. SEVEN, due to finish in 2020. Only 5 more years, but there's no guarantee she'll complete the series, and to quote one of the old fashionistas in Advanced Style "I'm too old to buy green bananas". Well I'm not but ugh, I'm not interested enough to wait with bated breath for 5 more books. Not helped by what I thought Mime Order was about per the blurb, is actually the climax of the book. I'm 80% through and it's not there yet! I may bail after this book and wait for a few years to see if I can be bothered again. I'm a prolific reader, not all highbrow with 38 finished so far this year. So an annual wait just makes me twitchy. It's like Sue Grafton's books. The wait for the next makes them drop off my radar until there's 2 or 3 I haven't read yet.
Lindsay Buroker's Emperors Edge series was great, and cos she'd already published the first 4 or 5 by the time I came across them, I was able to read the series in fairly close timeframe. I also really, REALLY liked C Gockel's I Bring the Fire series,
