Unregistered Project Completion: The 7 Hour 'Whim'

My fellow Lolitas, do you ever had those moments where you work yourself into near madness, and the very act of looking at your sewing machine makes your hands prickle? I hadn't touched mine in 2 months, ever since Sakuracon this year, after a marathon of work that crushed my drive to sew anything at all.

I changed that yesterday, and punched out a JSK in about 7 hours, from start to finish. It's a personal record for me!

I had this fabric since christmas, when I was given a Joanne's gift card. I saw this fabric on discount, and I HAD to have it. I've always wanted a basic red and and white polka-dotted JSK in the vein of AP's French Doll series. I love polka dots, and how they look paired with clean A-line skirts and simple bodices. They add visual interest without overwhelming the eye, if done right. I tend to err on the Classic/Retro side of things, and as such, I put this together.

My bad laying skills made one side look longer than the other. I assure you; they match and hang properly on the mannaquin. The construction's simple, with modified princess seams and darts along the bust. I didn't use a pattern for this. It's all muscle memory at this point. :D;; All the lace is cotton. The back is fully shirred, with 3 channels. The skirt itself is a basic circle skirt that I fudged. I added about 6-7 extra inches into my waist measurements, in order to give it visual interest when I gathered it into the bodice, and the illusion of a gathered rectangle skirt. The skirt itself is enormous, comprised of 3 half-circles, so it spins really, really well. I considered pleating it, keyword 'considered', but I didn't think that box pleates would pair well with polka dots. :( Regardless, it's comfortable, light-weight, and just a really fun JSK that'll be great for summer, or a fresh, funky punch in wintertime if I wanted.

Here's a close up of the bodice.

The belt and bow are removable, so I can pair this with all kinds of colors, belts, and accessories. I completely winged this one, and it's the first dress in ages that came out PERFECT the first time. I think it'd be super cute with a black beret, some white lace gloves, and some black oxfords to finish the look. I can't wait for an excuse to wear it.
