Help me get started?

Hi, I see you all know what you're doing, so I figured I'd ask you. I'm a beginnee seamstress and new to Lolita fashion. Seeing as I'm in high school with no income as of right now, my best bet is to sew or thirft my wardrobe. I really like Classic, Gothic, and some of Sweet (it panders to my extremely cutesy side). I was wondering if anyone had ( Read more... )

I think this tutorial is considered one of the best out there for a basic skirt:

I would also search for Miscy here on LJ as she had some good tutorials as well

And if you google By Hand London you should find their circle skirt calculator which makes them so easy!

As far as getting material look at your sheet and curtain sections as well as the dresses to find fabrics you can salvage for skirts. You can even reclaim elastic from men's sports shorts!

Definitely try to enroll for an Home Ec class (if your school offers them) otherwise look into 4-H clubs if they are available in your county. And don't forget to get you 10% student discount through Joann's just bring in a current school ID card or report card!

Thank you for all of this! I didn't realize that JoAnn had a student discount; I shop there so much that I should. I wonder what Hancock fabrics haa to offer... but thanks for all of the useful info, I'll look into this immediately.

I pretty much recommend the tutorials on this site, they cover everything that you need for a DIY wardrobe until/if you decide to purchase brand or indie brands. I have contributed several tutorials and use several as well. And, as I always emphasize in my own posts, be patient with sewing, do your best but don't get discouraged if the first few things turn out awful!

The simplest way to start is probably with a rectangle skirt - this is a great tutorial here http://rhodygunn.deviantart.com/art/Lolita-Skirt-Tutorial-Part-1-108767651

(I'm sorry for replying to this reply, but I can't find the correct button.)

You (junjouoverdose) mentioned thrifting, and it's a great place to start. Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc, are great places to find blouses. Sometimes you can even find lolita-ble skirts and dresses. Seriously. A hem here, some trim there. And remember that you can take the tops off dresses. Also, the curtains and bed sets and stuff are great for fabric without seams in it.

Here's a link to everything I've come across that's either a lolita tutorial or could be made lolita (warning: It's huge! like 200+ projects).
