Work Updates and a Fic Rec

Whew! I think I am all caught up with my f-list now. Between last week's LJ downtime and starting my new job this week, I've had little time for... pretty much anything.

Today was my third day at the company, and I'm starting to settle in a bit. My official (-ish?) title for this position is UI/UX Designer and CSS Scripter. It combines art and web design, both of which I enjoy doing very much, and the games are casual/mobile, which is a good place to be.
I tried driving to the office at first, which was fine in the morning but stressful during the evening, so I've switched to using BART + Caltrain instead, which I like a lot better.

I've been alternately either unemployed or freelance for the past two years, so the transition into a full-time office gig has been odd. I'm trying desperately to wrap up a few loose ends from my contract and complete a bunch of paperwork for the new job, leaving me precious little free time to actually do anything else.

I'm glad I have Nic around to motivate me, though, because while I want to do the best I can at work, I don't want my productivity to be limited to the office alone. I need to do some more 3D model work, and soon!

Oh, and we both started reading Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, after Walter recommended it to us. There's a lovely little .pdf that someone compiled that's styled the same way as the HP book pages for the US copies.
I get a huge kick out of Alternate Universe fanfic when it's done well, and this fanfic is extremely fun to read. It's not as well-written as the real series, and my Brit-self gets a bit annoyed at the random switching between dialects where it hasn't been beta'd out yet, but if you like logic and/or the scientific method, you'll probably think it's freaking hilarious. The author will screw with your perception of the Potterverse something fierce, though. Just don't take all the over-analysis of magic personally.

work, harry potter
