My fellow 6th grade reading teachers and myself were JUST talking about that yesterday! We're some of the youngest teachers in the school and we all graduated from the same program so we totally understand how much patience they need. For instance I have one student that ended up in detention yesterday with the sub. I know who she is and how she speaks to adults. She always sounds like she has an attitude but she really doesn't, it's just her demeanor. She's always so sweet to me and when I give her a re-direction she listens and doesn't argue. But if you approach her in the wrong way she will give attitude because it's how she was raised. I've met her mother... she's the exact same way!!
Your job sounds awesome! My husband's mom is an information specialist and her best friend is the media specialist (aka the librarian). She doesn't have a library degree either but she loves her job so much! I love read alouds with the younger kids and we're actually trying to implement something in our school so that the older kids get read alouds with chapter books. It's so hard getting class sets of books though. Kids really benefit from it though!!
