Wednesday Reading Meme

What I Just Finished Reading: Only one book (not sure how that happened) but it was a great one: Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune. Review below.

I also DNFed The Only Purple House in Town by Ann Aguirre. I found it very sloppily written and it felt rushed.

What I'm Reading Right Now: I'm about 3/4 through the first book of the Mistborn series, The Final Empire. I'm liking it, but I think it could use a good edit.

What I'm Planning to Read Next: I'm planning a trip to Toronto to visit a friend so I'll be on a train for about 2.5 hours total (there and back) so I'm going to need to pick a kindle book, and my most recent library books are physical. It'll be a surprise.

112. Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune

I would give this 5000 stars if I could.

There is always this fear with a sequel that the magic can’t be recaptured. There is NO fear of that here, because this book is as magical and special and heartwarming and laugh out loud funny as the last. Linus and Arthur face off against the Department In Charge Of Magical Youth and it’s as fabulous as you’d imagine. My favourite again was Chauncey, described as “sunshine in blobby form” and OMG yes. His sweet innocence and self-confidence makes me so happy. The other kids are beautifully drawn too, and while the story may be a little bit of “preaching to the choir”, that doesn’t make it any less uplifting.

A billion stars.

(And kudos to Klune for calling out JK Rowling in the afterword. You go, Mr. Klune!)
