What I Just Finished Reading: Somehow I only managed one book this week, Malefactor by Robert Repino.
I also DNF'ed a book at less than 75 pages in, something called Good Girl's Guide to Murder. One of the last remaining challenge prompts at "74 Letters" is to read a book currently in the top 50 in your country (from a provided link), and I just do NOT read the kinds of books that are on this list. I borrowed Good Girl from Amy in desperation as the best of a bad lot, and hated it.
I'm left with two more possibilities to try. One is by Lisa Jewell called None of This is True. I had borrowed two of her books from Amy before. She writes overwrought but ridiculously readable books that are so over-the-top yet somehow delicious. I'm number 87 in line for her latest one that's on the list, so I'll see how fast the line moves. The other is called Beach Read... can't remember who wrote it, but I ordered it from the library and have my fingers crossed.
What I'm Reading Right Now: I'm nearing the end of book 100 (!!!), Archangel's Lineage by Nalini Singh. Thank goodness the series has gotten back to the main characters that we readers love best.
What I'm Planning to Read Next: Generally speaking, my "finish the prompts" goal will be on hold for a bit because of an influx of library books that are in transit to me (unless one of them happens to fit a prompt.) Next up will probably be CJ Tudor's The Gathering, which I had to move lower on the list when the Nalini Singh book came available on ebook. Then maybe Beach Read because it DOES fit another prompt.
99. Malefactor by Robert Repino
The series ends with D’Arc infiltrating wolf territory in search of something stolen from her, and Mort(e) dealing with the psychological and physical effects of his communication with the Colony.
There are moments in the book that are so well written. The pacing when D’Arc is in the midst of a calamity and the wolves steal from her is teeth-clenchingly tense. All of the character beats are, IMO, pitch perfect. I think sometimes the plot points can just get a touch convoluted. It’s good world-building but overall I know that I at least am here for D’Arc and Mort(e)’s story, not the wolves or the bats or the beavers.
I’m just not sure what to think of the ending. To be honest, I’m confused. It feels awkward and a little bittersweet.
