Wednesday Reading Meme

What I Just Finished Reading: Did I really only read one book last week? It appears so. I guess that's what happens when you don't read for two days, and spend a third day starting and then DNF'ing one (that was Gun, With Occasional Music, so y'all know to give is a miss.) Anyway, my one read was Mort(e) by Robert Repino, and it was enjoyable. Review below.

What I'm Reading Right Now: I'm about 1/4 of the way through A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows. It's a m/m arranged marriage story and it's quite good, but it's written in a sort of dense "1800s-ish" language so it's taking me longer to read than normal. Also haven't read as much in the last week.

What I'm Planning to Read Next: I signed up for a new challenge based on Misha Collins' GISH Scavenger Hunt, so I'll have to see what the prompts are like for that. They're released on Friday I believe. (It's on Goodreads at the Challenge Factory community and they are still taking sign-ups if anyone is interested) Otherwise, I have my picks from the Dusty Bookshelf and Finish What You Started challenges, so I will go with one of those. Maybe Bird Box by Josh Malerman. I've never seen the movie.

67. Morte by Robert Repino

This is a truly original and intriguing novel.

Sebastian is a cat whose best friend is Sheba, the neighbour’s dog. They are bonded through thick and thin. But a traumatic event (warning: abuse here and later in the book) sends Sheba running away on the eve of a life-changing evolution that results in animals growing to human size and gaining sentience (and opposable thumbs). It’s all because the ants have been plotting to overthrow humankind.

Yes, I KNOW it sounds crazy. It IS crazy.

Rebranding himself as Morte, Sebastian becomes a fighter for animal liberation… but his true goal is to find his lost love, Sheba. He never gives up looking for her, and the humans never give up fighting, and in the end the book is about the struggle between logic and blind faith.

I think the book tries to do some heavy lifting in regard to life and death, religion, myths and philosophy, and because the war itself is rather glossed over the world building can fall a little flat and the big issues are not really as fleshed out as they could be. But I really loved the stories of the animals. And ultimately I was in it for Morte’s quest to find Sheba and I was certainly satisfied there.
