What I Just Finished Reading: Only one book, Strange Love by Ann Aguirre (review below.)

I started Deep End of the Ocean and got 24 pages in before I realized that I'd read it already. Other than that, I haven't started anything new because I've been focusing on trying to get caught up on a whole bunch of other things that I've let slide, and I'm still working a lot. Hope to get back on track reading-wise this week.

What I'm Reading Right Now: Nothing at the moment.

What I'm Planning to Read Next: Book 2 in the Commune series by Joshua Gayou, which was picked as my series to catch up on over at the Finish What You Started challenge.

25. Strange Love by Ann Aguirre

When Zylar heads off to pick up his potential bride, a space storm and an AI on the fritz mistakenly divert him to Earth, where he thinks he’s rescuing his bride (and her companion) from the aftermath of a battle. Turns out the woman is instead Beryl, and the companion is her little dog, Snaps. Oops.

Zylar has never seen humans or dogs before, so he implants the good ol’ universal translator in both of them. Yay, talking dog! Luckily Snaps is pretty much what you’d expect, chiefly interested in showing what a good boy he is, snacks and pets, and protecting his human. Good boy, Snaps!

Stuck and with no way home, Beryl decides to stick with Zylar and participate in the Choosing, where potential mates must prove their worth. She’s smart and resilient, and I enjoyed watching her navigate the games. It’s Zylar who is the star here, though. Unlike most aliens in the genre (and believe me, I’ve read my share) who are usually humanoid but just maybe they have horns or a tail, Zylar is truly alien. I pictured him as sort of a cross between a bug and a chicken. And also unlike the usual “alpha male, 6’6’ he-man” types of the genre, Zylar is awkward, suffers from low self-esteem, and is genuinely sweet and kind and only wants the best for Beryl. It was lovely watching them grow to love each other.

And Snaps. I love Snaps.
