Hello, all. I have been creeping ever closer to my goal so I finally increased my reading goal from 90 books to 120 books. Woot woot.
What I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I read 3 books: The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty, and two Chet & Bernie books by Spencer Quinn, Of Mutts and Men and Tender is the Bite. Reviews for all three below.
What I'm Reading Right Now: I was reading one of the vampire books I got from the library (In The Valley of the Sun by Andy Davidson) but I gave it up about 1/4 of the way through because it was trying too hard and was basically pretentious twaddle. I have four other unread library books here, but none of them are particularly appealing to me right now. Weird how that happens. So I downloaded a different library book, Midnight Sun by Jo Nesbo, and will start that one today.
What I'm Planning to Read Next: Going to have to be one of the physical library books sitting here. I might go with V-Wars: Night Terrors, another vampire book, because it will essentially finish off that series for me. (There is a fourth book but neither my library system nor any of the ones we affiliate with have it, and I'm just not interested enough to pay for it.)
87. The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty
When a woman finds an envelope left to her from her husband (which was not supposed to be opened until his death) and reads the contents, the secret within affects the lives of many people in her life. I enjoyed the interconnectedness of the people and the way their struggles and secrets twined together in ways they didn’t even know about. The one downside to the book is that it is left to the women to “be the bigger person”, solve the problems, and forgive the transgressions. It’s feels like it’s written as empowerment, but it feels like a copout from the men to me.

88. Of Mutts and Men by Spencer Quinn
Another great installment in the Chet & Bernie series. The mystery involves the aquifer - always on Bernie’s mind - and is fairly straightforward. There’s a few series arc loose ends tied up, with relationships ending and beginning. And the Chet POV is on fire here, with both a poignant moment where Chet comforts an old friend to several laugh-out-loud moments (the ones that come to mind are Chet musing on where on Bernie’s body his arms would go if Bernie had four legs, and Chet’s confusion when it appears that Bernie believes he has his own tail.) I also love how Chet is not only learning new things and coming to some interesting ‘so therefore’s’ on his own, but how much he loves “his Bernie” just makes my heart swell.

89. Tender is the Bite by Spencer Quinn
Sadly, this one was a big disappointment. Oh, Chet continues to be fabulous. Never doubt Chet the Jet! But the mystery is a mess. There’s too many plot pieces that only vaguely interlock, too many characters, and waaaaay too much left unexplained. I still don’t understand some of the connections (Neddy and Ellis, the cop? The ATV place and the Ukrainians?) I’m baffled. On the plus side there was Chet (of course) and the introduction of Weatherly, who may be a new love interest for Bernie, and Trixie, who is probably Chet’s sister.
