Back

Back from a lovely weekend with my sister Margie and my brother-in-law Dan. We watched a lot of movies (John Wick for the win), told a lot of old stories, laughed a lot and made fun of each other a lot. It's what we do. I honestly am starting to feel better and a little more encouraged to get back on track with regular life.

In the past little while I've read two books. (Well, that first one can't really be called a book but it's sold as one so, my rules.)

70. Zombies vs. the Living Dead by Frank Tayell

A short story prelude to the "Surviving the Evacuation" series, the first book of which I am reading next. I enjoyed this little tale of what happens when, during the zombie apocalypse, staff abandon their posts at a village retirement home in the UK. It manages to touch on quite a few points in its short pages, most specifically giving readers a well-rounded picture of main character George Tull and the racial and class struggles that have shaped his life.

71. London: Surviving the Evacuation Book 1 by Frank Tayell

As the zombie apocalypse spreads around the world and the British government orders its citizens to evacuation centers to receive a vaccine, Bill is instead trapped in his tiny flat with a broken leg. The first half of the book, then, is Bill moaning about how he can't move around and can't make hot tea. Well, it *does* take place in Great Britain so, props for realism? I am not normally one to care how the apocalypse started, but in this case Bill was some sort of shady secret assistant to an MP and he manages to put two and two together. The action picks up in the second half when Bill finally decides that he needs to attempt to find somewhere safer to live.

I found the book interesting but rather flat, partly because the journal format meant that there was no real sense of danger. I'm giving this four stars because I *am* thinking of picking up the next book in the series, so he must have done something right.
