Movie Log Update

Aug 21, 2012 21:40

It's been awhile since I updated the ol' 2012 movie log. My mental goal was 50 movies by the end of the year... more than halfway there now.

So. Seven movies here, and not all of them are Reedus. THE SHOCK.

28. Troy (2004) - starring Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom
A couple of years ago when I still had cable, I saw a teensy clip of some movie where Orlando Bloom was in some kind of period costume wandering through a field of battle. "Hmmm," I thought. "Orlando Bloom is pretty." Didn't think about it again til a few weeks ago, when somehow it came up in conversation. Krystle suggested the the movie was "Troy", so she let me borrow it. All this to say: I watched the entire movie waiting for that field-of-battle scene from my memory. Didn't happen. It's the wrong movie. (Not horrible. I did like the coolio matrix-y battle style they gave Brad Pitt. But through the whole movie I kept thinking he looks like a monkey. /weird. Also liked Orlando's little bow-work at the end there.)

29. Kingdom of Heaven (2005) - starring Orlando Bloom, Jeremy Irons
"Hmm," I thought, "if Orlando Bloom didn't walk through a field of battle in 'Troy', he must have done it in some other period drama. And I want to see it. Because Orlando Bloom is pretty." So I found this movie, and watched the whole thing waiting for the field-of-battle scene. And: Didn't happen. It's the wrong movie. (Though it's well acted, I didn't really care about the blah blah politics talky-talky blah which takes up about the first 45 minutes of the movie. Once we got down to Jerusalem and the siege, I was in and loved it. Also? Orlando Bloom really IS pretty.)

30. Pandorum (2009) - starring Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Norman Reedus
Really enjoyed this! The beginning reminded me a little of Pitch Black. It's about a crew on a spaceship that wakes up from hypersleep (or whatever... you know, when they sleep for the duration of a long voyage) with no memory of their mission and something -- actually, many very creepy somethings -- on board the ship. Love the way the tension mounts as they try to work out what's happened. Reedus has a tiny role as a crewman with a lot of attitude. Heh. Also, no shirtlessness as a hunted crewman. Darn. (I heard that maybe Reedus did this for free? To thank the director for all his help after Reedus's horrible accident in 2005? Not sure on that, though.)

31. Saved! (2004) - starring Patrick Fugit, Eva Amurri, MacCauley Culkin
Yeah. I don't know. I saw Patrick Fugit's name and went OMG THE DUDE FROM ALMOST FAMOUS. HE'S AWESOME. So I watched it. It's a satire/parody of christian fundamentalists, and the young cast is really good. Yes, even Culkin.

32. Antibodies (2005) - starring Andre Hennicke, Norman Reedus
A serial killer/rapist who preys on children is captured in the first ten minutes of the film. The rest of the story is the cat and mouse game he plays with the small town cop in charge of trying to confirm whether the killer is responsible for a murder in his town. There is a nice foundation for the things that cop will begin to suspect (I can't say more without ruining it) and I enjoyed the movie, but after a while that foundation got a little too heavy-handed... I knew something was up. Reedus has a teeensy role as one of the cops who finds the killer in the beginning. Cops do not go shirtless, more's the pity.

33. 8mm (1999) - starring Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, Norman Reedus
Cage plays a private detective trying to find out whether a snuff film is real. I really enjoyed the first half of the film -- watching Cage go from a to b to c as he sussed out the truth was actually pretty fascinating (even though I totally guessed one person's involvement literally within the first few minutes.) Then things just got waaaay too coincidental/convenient, and the movie lost me. Norman has about a three minute scene as the now-in-jail ex-boyfriend of the girl in the film. He wears an orange prison jumpsuit and looks ridiculously gorgeous. (And nails his scene, too. Even if he's not shirtless.)

34. Moscow Chill (2007) - starring Norman Reedus, Xusha Buravsky
Thank you to atxstnic, who sent me this movie, I was finally able to see this one. *kisses* Norman has the lead role as a hacker -- he starts out the movie by breaking into the ATM system in New York so that all the bank machines start randomly spewing out twenties -- (Matt Farrell approves) -- who is broken out of the psych ward in jail by a russian gangster and taken to Moscow, to do nefarious hacker-y things. Norman is great as a fish out of water as things quickly spiral out of control. And there's a shout out to his son -- when Norman is typing his login, the screen shows the letters M-I-N-G-U. Hmmm, I think I know what the next letter is. I LOVE shit like that. (No shirtlessness, but there is a making out in an undershirt scene. I will take what I can get.)

And in the rewatch pile? The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Because Orlando Bloom is pretty. And also Six Ways to Sunday, because I just read the book that it's based on (which is awesome, btw. It's "Portrait of a Young Man Drowning" by Charles Perry and you should totally read it) and because I freakin' LOVE THIS MOVIE.
.
