QaF -- has it really been TEN years?
Wow, how time flies when you're obsessed, huh? :D
I'm seeing so many people on my flist do this QaF Meme in honour of the 10th anniversary, and I'm getting all nostalgic and feeling the urge to pull out the DVDs. So I thought, okay, I'm IN. (This is technically netlagd's fault because hers was the last post about it I saw on my flist, and she asked "won't you join me?". Why yes, yes I will.)
Day 1 - How did you come to Queer as Folk and the fandom?
I had seen the commercials for the show and KNEW it was something I would like, but at that time I worked afternoons so I never got the chance to watch it. Fast forward a year, my shift at work had changed, and I was home flicking channels when I came across a season 2 episode. To be honest I don't remember what happened in THAT ep, but it was enough to keep me turning in. The first episode I remember *loving* was the viagara ep, with its awesome mix of Ted-and-Em humour and Brian-angst. After that I watched regularly, and started asking everyone I knew if they'd ever seen the show -- I remember being so *thrilled* to discover that one of my co-workers was a fan, then slightly disappointed that she wasn't as obsessed as I was!
I went out and bought S1 after S2 aired, so I was safely caught up and could venture into the online world. I wish I could remember -- OH, I went to the showcase board (Canadian network that aired QaF) and from there I met miachen who held my hand and escorted me safely around those early days of fandom. I couldn't get "I want you safe. I want you around for a long time" out of my head, so I wrote my first QaF fanfic (pretty horrible, looking back on it, but it got a good reception and I kept writing and got better.) I started a website, and miachen took me to a board run by... Ardra? where I started posting links to my fic and interacting with other fans. From there it was the Refugee Board, and then everyone was talking about LJ and there was the whole "Austria vs. Poland" thing and I was firmly entrenched as a board person, but miachen kept insisting I had to come to LJ and she gave me a code (that was back when you needed codes to get a journal) and so I reluctantly signed up and was welcomed with open arms.
And then I met all YOU GUYS, and there was meta and discussion and anti-Ethan and squeeage and BEING SO CAREFUL TO AVOID SPOILERS and omg Gapfillerpalooza with twistinside82 and long talks with ayesakara and and and. My fandom life WAS QaF for those many years, and it was awesome and crazy and intense and wild. Trips to NYC to see Gale and Randy in their plays, trips to the Berkshires, screening of Ep 1 of S3 in Toronto with the cast, Rhinoceros Eyes in TO with Gale, geeeeezus. Sometimes it feels like years ago, and sometimes it feels like yesterday.
