The second half of '70's week. And seriously, this is the worst load of girls EVER. I hate girls night. Can't wait till they combine the two groups.
Carly Smithson sings "Crazy On You"
Okay, I admit that I cannot be objective about Carly. She sounds like she's reaching for the high notes, and she's not always finding them. Devolved to screechy toward the end. She has no stage presence whatsoever. And what the hell was up with her sounding like she'd just run a 5k marathon? Seriously, you should not be that out of breath after singing 2 verses/2 choruses of a song. Hate her. Hate.
Syesha Mercado sings "Mr and Mr(s) Jones"
This is a great song... but not when Syesha sings it. She's got personallity and she's adorable, but the only time her vocal shone was on the first big 'Me and Mr Jones' part in the middle. The end was off and screamy. But I don't agree that she should sing big power numbers all the time. She should learn how to sing other styles. Shouldn't that be evident? *shrugs*
Brooke White sings "You're So Vain"
This is the first time that I've been able to see what the judges having been seeing in her all along. PERFECT song choice. I love that she accompanies herself on guitar and it feels like a natural part of the performance. I love the tone to her voice, and the whole thing sounded almost flawless to me. She also looked comfortable and natural on stage. Well done.
Ramiele Malubay sings "Don't Leave Me This Way"
This song is a big favourite of mine, and she's got a good voice no doubt, but the song choice was totally wrong for her. I do love the naturally gravelly thing she does with her voice occasionally, but overall this was just meh.
Kristy Lee Cook sings "You're No Good"
Is she going to do the splits on stage? That stance was incredibly distracting, as were the squinty eyes. The vocal was okay, but I felt like the repetitive nature of the lyrics was boring and the song itself did her no favours. It's like, the vocal was fine, the song was okay, but something about the girl + song was offputting.
Amanda Overmyer sings "Carry On My Wayward Son"
Oh no. Just no. The first four lines were promising. I like the rock-out "dancing". Then the verse started and... ouch. Totally off-key and off-melody. If I was in a dive bar with a beer in hand I would love it. But it just wasn't good enough for this level of performance.
Alaina Whitaker sings "Hopelessly Devoted to You"
She does nothing new with the song, and the low parts sounded a wee bit off to me. But I really like her. She's got the power notes and is able to belt out when she needs to, but she can easily handle the softer parts of the song as well. Take note, Syesha.
Alexandrea Lushington sings "If You Leave Me Now"
What is up with those oversize shorts/cargopants/whatever? This is totally the wrong song for her. Boring, bland, and very very very off-key. The weird thing is that I could see the potential behind this -- there were moments where it seemed like she almost had something, but they were so fleeting. Maybe if she had more time and/or confidence to work with the arrangement she could have pulled it off.
Kady Malloy sings "Magic Man"
She gets overwhelmed by the band and... the song seemed too wordy for her? She doesn't have enough breath to finish off each line. She also sounds out of tune to me throughout pretty much the whole thing. I didn't like anything at all about this. Pretty horrible.
Asia'h Epperson sings "All By Myself"
Ouch. This... this is just painful. She sounds like she's got a cold. And then she starts screaming at me. Stop screaming at me!
My Predictions
Seriously, I loved one girl (Brooke) and liked one more (Alaina). The rest were varying stages of horrible. The girl contingent is SO BAD this year. It could seriously be any of 7 girls going home (I think Carly had the third best vocal of the night, despite the fact that I hate her.) Soooo...
I'm going with...
damn....
Amanda and Kady
*sigh*
