American Idol -- Top 12 Girls

More of the '60's Theme.

01. Kristy Lee Cook sings "Rescue Me"
Okay, first off: she totally looks like Linda Evans as "Sugar Kane" in that Frankie Avalon/Annette Funnicello movie, "Beach Blanket Bingo". She even does the same nose crinkle thing! Seriously, watch the scene where Sugar Kane sings "New Love". [/end beach blanket blather] Okay, so Kristy has no energy, and the song almost feels like it's moving in slow motion. The whole thing sounds 'off' somehow, like she's never quite hitting the right notes? Basically, a mess.

02. Joanne Borgella sings "Say A Little Prayer"
Another mess. Is she singing it in the wrong key? It seems to be waaaay too high for her, but then her lows don't work either. It's so emotionless, no soul or connection to the lyrics whatsoever.

03. Alaina Whitaker sings "More Today Than Yesterday"
Well, she blew away Chikezie's version. Is that really saying much? Good energy, good confidence. But an hour later, I barely remember it. Eh.

04. Amanda Overmyer sings "Baby Please Don't Go"
This isn't exactly a song to showcase vocals, and Amanda got overpowered a bit by the guitar, but she has a great personality and she put on a good memorable performance. I also totally agree that she's 100% authentic: what you see is what you get, and I admire that.

05. Amy Davis sings "Where The Boys Are"
Ouch. Was that whole thing flat? Sounded like absolute shit.

06. Brooke White sings "Happy Together"
Well. She tried to connect with the song. Seemed to get ahead of the music, and the vocals were weak at first but got better. Just meh.

07. Alexandrea Lushington sings "Spinning Wheel" (I think that's the title)
Finally! Oodles of confidence, and great stage presence. The vocals aren't great, but I love love love her lower register, and she makes up for any vocal deficiency by her confidence.

08. Kady Malloy sings "Groovy Kind of Love"
Kady just doesn't get it. She seems to think that slow = joyless. The vocal was very good, but boring and sort of monotonous.

09. Asia'h Epperson sings "Piece of My Heart"
I liked this! Lots of confidence, and a great vocal. The only thing that bothers me about her voice is that she tends to cut off the beginnings of words. "Heart" becomes 'eart, "piece" becomes 'iece. But she doesn't do it consistently; "piece" is sometimes still "piece". I'm not sure if that happens because she's straining her voice, or what. It's just a weird thing that I always notice.

10. Ramiele Mulabay sings "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"
Wow, this is really good. Nice vocals, very subtle, good phrasing, and confidence. My favourite of the night.

11. Syesha Mercado sings "Tobacco Road" (or is it "Tobacco Row"?)
Well. I kind of hated this. I mean, the vocals were good. But it seemed like she lost the melody in the middle, and the whole thing just felt so frantic. Like, not an ounce of subtlely in the performance. And then at the end she screamed at me. I hate screaming.

12. Carly Smithson sings "The Shadow of Your Smile" (?? No idea ??)
I definitely hated this. Boring. Shouty. No energy. Sounded like something you'd hear in a piano bar. Just all around boring boring boring. (And colour me shocked that AI both revealed her past -- albeit without all the details -- AND that Simon hated this too. Yay Simon!)

My Predictions:
I think the male talent is HEAPS better than the female talent this year. I honestly think only about 4 women are safe, coz this was a whole lotta bad singing tonight.
FWIW, I think... Amy Davis and Joanne Borgella. I don't know.
