This weekend I moved. Not far, just from Basset District to Jenifer St. But it was definitely an Ordeal. Firstly, my dad reserved a U-Haul trailer. 2 weeks after he did so, they finally contacted him and said that you can only rent them for a maximum of 4 hours at a time in the month of August in Madison. So my dad ordered one in Manitowoc, which turned out to be bigger and we could have it all weekend. Except when he showed up to get it, it was an open trailer, not one of those little pods. So he started calling all of the cities en route to Madison and found a teeny-tiny one in Sheboygan Falls. Except it was due back at 5 pm Friday. And we couldn't fit all the stuff in it, so we ended up leaving stuff on the porch of my old place until we could move in at noon on Friday. Except then my roommate went to get the keys and they said "Oh sorry, your lease doesn't start until noon tomorrow [ie. Saturday]." We actually had a hotel room for that night because my dad doesn't actually listen to half of what I say so he reserved it for the "wrong" night. And we ended up being able to keep the trailer for another day by paying for the people who were going to get it at 5 on Friday to upgrade to a slightly bigger one. And we were able to store some extra stuff that didn't fit in the tiny trailer at my roommate's uncle's place (said uncle is actually my roommate's dad's identical twin, and my roommate's dad was my high school assistant principal, so I felt a little bit like I was in trouble at school :p). So it all worked out, but it was very stressful, in case you can't tell by my frantic ramblings. It also required going a couple days without clean clothes (new ones were purchased at Target, so it was really only 1/2 a day), wearing my retainer, or taking my meds, since they were all packed away.
Other things that suck about moving:
- All the dust floating about makes me sneeze. My sneezes scare things like my roommate, small children and my pet rat.
- My everything hurts. My muscles feel old.
- I am so incredibly broke until next payday (I had to make a new-apartment-shopping trip at both Target and Woodman's).
- There are several minor repairs that my apartment needs-- nothing huge, but still annoying. Such as, our bathroom door does not lock and I think my eyes might bleed if I accidentally walk in on my roommate. And our doorbell does not work.
- Oh yeah, and we don't have keys to the front door or our laundry room.
- We have no internet until tomorrow morning. Fortunately I have a job where I can dick around online in between calls.
- I own way too much shit. Way, way, way too much shit. I am trying to get rid of the stuff I don't use but I end up amassing more stuff at the same time. And it is really hard for me to get rid of anything. I am a certifiable pack rat.
- I hate unpacking.
- My bedroom and my roommate's bedroom share a wall, and I am paranoid that he and his girlfriend are going to have loud, disturbing sex and I will hear them when I am trying to sleep.
Things that are awesome about moving:
- I really really like my new neighborhood. And my apartment is pretty much awesome-- it has really neat architecture and is open and sunny and great.
- We are going to have a bar. We got it for free. Right now said bar has a heavily tarnished brass top. Polishing heavily tarnished metal is one of my favorite things in the world.
- I hate unpacking, but I do love organizing things. I know that is hard to believe for just about anybody who knows me at all. But I have to have places to put things, places where said things will be happy living, for me to organize. And the money I spent at Target means that there are such places in my apartment.
- I also like decorating and DIY projects. We will have several of these in the month to come, since we have a lot of used furniture that I can fuck with.
- Also the apartment will be a good place for social gatherings.
- My roommate's pretty much awesome. Also his girlfriend is staying with us for the next week or so, and she likes to clean. She washed our dishes last night just to relax.
- We are going to have the nerdiest apartment ever. Said roommate has about 70 board games. Plus we will have 2 Wiis. We will network them. It will be awesome.
