I have a bone to pick about dragon age modding

but I'm not sure how to pick it. This is making no coherent sense because I am tired and sore and cranky and exhausted and just. No.

Let's see how we go.

This really gets my back up.Why the fuck do they feel the need to change what is already an awesome character and make her, well. White? The game isn't quite as diverse as I'd like it as it is ( Read more... )

I've got a whole gender and sex-specific rant on female characters, male gamers, and power dynamics at work in video games, but I'm too B( over looking at that screenshot to articulate any of it right now. Suffice to say, people who mod these games aren't playing them for the story; they're playing them to get off on violence and idealized female bodies that they can guiltlessly salivate over in a fashion that wouldn't be socially acceptable outside of their bedrooms. It frightens me.

But along that vein I'm glad games are branching out and giving players the opportunity to customize the main PC. I'm not so impressed by F!Hawke in DA2, but F!Shepard in the Mass Effect series is an empowered woman who owns her every decision, doesn't take shit from anyone, and expects to be treated exactly the same as the men around her, nothing less.

Developers are making progress. ..Slowly.

F-Hawke is pretty fucking badass in my opinion, just cause well. Bitch took on the qunari and won. She took on the mages/templars and won. She's not some pushover and I hate how people write her like that cause asdf;lkjasd.

And she can be--if you choose the hardass dialogue options. Which I have done when I've played as her, because choosing the humorous or peaceful options don't make me feel like I'm playing an empowered female. I feel like I'm playing a male fantasy. :/

I think I might just be hypersensitive to it, though, so maybe that's why I can't enjoy the same diversity with F!Hawke as I can with F!Shepard.

edit: I think more broadly I have a problem with the character's body language in DA2. I don't like the idle movements of the female PC. I mean, I'm glad that they do something, but I preferred the avatar movements in Origins. The female characters' hips didn't sway suggestively with every step, they don't stretch like Disney princesses awakening from their peaceful slumber in Happily Ever Afterland, they don't look like Seattle hipsters bored stiff by breathing. I would have been perfectly content for my F!Hawke to share the exact same idle movements as Aveline who, save for when walking, didn't look less female for her lack of feminine ( ... )
