HERE HAVE SOME ESSAY
Increasingly, fans are able to contact the producers of their media to make their opinions known. In the documentary Path of Darkness - the making of Silent Hill, the producer of the film, Don Carmody, says “The fan base for Silent Hill is very, very protective of the game, so we have been very careful to listen to the fans, and maintain the suspense and the areas that they really feel strongly about.” This inclusion of the fans almost guaranteed a favourable reception, no matter what the critics came out with about the movie. In fact, it grossed $97 million dollars worldwide.
The levels of fandom, however, can be varied. From the casual fan, who is only in it for the fun, to the serious fan who lives and breathes the culture and is involved heavily in the creation and distribution of fan made media, they all play a part in the success of a particular franchise. This is being noticed more and more by the producers and even the actors. In Path of Darkness, Deborah Kara Unger mentions the fact that in order to play the role of Dahlia in the movie, she went to the fans as well as studying the game and the script.
