Just because I feel like it, I'm throwing up something I did for
iron_konoha. *shrugs* I'll probably do more with Anko. Why? Because I've suddenly got the greatest pairing idea EVA'. *good guy pose* *snorts* GaixAnko baby, YOISH!

Anyway...onto teh postage: The typos are my own because I'm not special enough to have a beta. *nods*

The water felt cool, but not unpleasantly, so as she walked against the lapping waves along the shoreline. Soft, slick soil pressed against the soles of her feet with each step and squeezed between her toes where the water eroded away her path, sinking her feet into the muck. It felt utterly divine in Anko’s opinion and there was something almost sinful about the simplicity of her pleasure. She’d not been allowed such childish delights in a long time. Then again, she‘d rarely been allowed a childhood. Maybe that was why she acted so utterly foolish most the time.

Pale eyes looked back up from a rippled reflection. They looked far too old to be set in such a young face. She brought a foot up, mud sloshing off the appendage, and sent it slamming down on top the distorted façade. She didn’t like looking at herself much anymore; hadn’t since she’d returned to the village all those years ago. Anko had lost something back then, lying on the cold floor of Orochimaru’s secreted lab, and no amount of time or effort was she ever going to be allowed to regain it. Konohagakure was an unforgiving place in the face of traitors. Even if the students were innocent.

Her sandals lay neatly on the bank a few yards from her position. Somewhere within her mind she could hear her mother -- How long had it been since she’d had one? -- scolding her for not wearing them to save her feet from the sharp edges of the rocks hidden among the dirt beneath her feet . The jounin chuckled at the thought, if only it were a memory, and continued to push against the current. If her feet were to be cut then so be it. She could easily patch herself up or go to a healer after her swim. A little pain was good for the body. It let one know they were still alive and gave them a reason to keep going, if only to stop the pain before death. A sardonic smile spread across her features; it seemed so natural. However, the smile didn’t last long after she dove beneath the cerulean surface; the sudden burst of cold sensation wiped everything away.

She would swim the water’s current until her arms hurt and her lungs burned. She’d push herself those extra few feet beneath the surface until she was skimming the bottom with her belly. She’d do it until she felt light headed and ready to die. Anko would do anything it took to keep herself underneath the rushing water’s surface. It was the only place she felt safe anymore. . .the only place she felt clean. Sadly she knew she’d have to go up for air….knew she’d have to return to the village. A place that scorned her existence because of a tarnish she couldn’t never clear away.

Floating, she wondered what it felt like to be a fish and laughed, without humor, at the irony of her life. She’d ran away from one of the few people she’d trusted utterly to save a village that would eventually turn against her for things she had no control over. She’d saved them and damned herself. A few years ago she’d never allow herself the luxury, but now . . . Now she allowed herself to cry and let the river wash away her sins.
