This place is only known as the City. It seems it's a world unto itself, however that's possible. People like ourselves are brought here from our own worlds, and are trapped here until the "deities" who control this place see fit to return us to our own place and time.

It's all a bit difficult to believe, but after all, there are things about our own lives that other people would say are impossible.

I don't believe you have anything to be concerned about. As far as anyone has determined, we return to the exact place and moment that we left, so there's no point in worrying about whatever responsibilities you waiting have back in New York.
