Diagon Alley [Open to Any and All?]

Aug 03, 2009 20:14

Mum had wanted to go to Diagon Alley and Uncle Andre, just to show him around…prove somehow that they weren’t less than the French because they were in England. It meant, really, that Leon had wanted to go too…just to see what Uncle Andre thought, to just be near him in a way that was probably a bit too puppish in the eyes of many. There were days ( Read more... )

Ren hadn't wandered too far off. But as she had invited her brother along on this journey, it was only polite to keep up with him. Of course...that was before he decided to go to Knockturn Alley. Now he was on his own. And without Leon, thank goodness. She knew for a fact, he was still in the bookstore.

Which meant she still had a little bit before he even noticed they were gone. Just enough time to start perusing the boys Birthday presents.

Ah-ha! There she was! He watched her through the shop window for a few moments, trying to figure out what she was looking at and why. Though, where was Uncle Andre? Frowning, he looked around the street again, curious.

Whatever she was looking at, it was obviously housed in the shop's case as she was looking down and pointing at something. As the shop keep handed it to her, she examined it carefully -- as if whatever it was was extremely important. And it a way, it was.

Leon looked back, peering into the shop curiously again. He couldn't see what she was looking at though, and it disappointed him a little. After a moment, though, he gave up and headed for the door up into the shop.

"Mum..." he said, coming up beside her to look at what was in her hands. He was a nosey kid.

"Hey...I thought you were still in the bookstore..." Ren smiled as her son joined her. Of course, this meant she was going to have to be extra sneaky. "Your father needs a new watch...which one of these do you like?"

He blinked, looking down at the watch in her hands with a bit of a skeptical look. It was a watch, it told time...and what about those extra hands? Well it was a wizarding watch, it probably did more than just tell time, but that wasn't really the point was it?

"That one is alright, but I don't know what all those hands mean." He said with a shrug, looking at the case curiously as he tried to spy something he thought was rather sensible and....fatherish.

Teenagers were utterly unhelpful. How could Ren have forgotten that? This was going to be a bit harder than she thought. Maybe she should go to Paris and go looking? No. Nonsense. Like the boys were even going to care. They'd be more interested in their other gifts...not the silly tradition.

Still...to a mother it was a big deal. They were coming of age. And she wanted these to be special. She knew which one she was getting Gael. It had twelve hands, as all wizarding watches do, and then Quidditch player that circled the outside. But for Leon...she was unsure. And she wanted this to be perfect.

"The hands represent the hours...in a traditional watch the outer circle moves, not the hands...see..." She pointed it out to him, finding she didn't mind the explanation. It was a bit like when he and Gael were little and would constantly be asking questions. Which she never seemed to mind answering. It led one to wonder if she had some secret recipe for patience potion of something...

"So that big hand doesn't move at all?" He sort of stared at her a bit skeptical. What was the point in having a hand if it didn't move? "What about the other hands, do they move at all?" He looked at it again, wondering what it could possibly need all twelve of them for. "What is the point of having so many hands? Can't they just make things simple?"

Laughing, Ren shook her head. "Of course not. It wouldn't be fun if it were simple."

"Would make more sense if it was simple. Who really needs twelve hands to tell them all that? I don't care what cycle the moon is in, or half of that stuff. Doesn't seem to have much point really."

"It's traditional. But perhaps this is an errand best run while alone. Oui, ma loutre?" Thanking the shop keep, she handed the watch back. So much for the hope of them being excited about it. Oh well...she'd be excited and they could just...

She wasn't even sure.

She missed the boys being little. Very much so. Everything seemed easier when they were little.

When they were little, Leon and Gael had been the apple of their parent's eye. Twin boys with plenty of talent and an undeniable desire to be like their father. Now, well...

That was certainly debatable. Gael claimed that no one knew what was going on with Leon lately, and Leon thought Gael was getting more support and attention that he deserved. Teens. What would you do with them?

"Oh, okay." He smiled at her, looking at the watches again with some interest, before looking back. "Where did Uncle Andre and Gael go?"

Not to mention they were much more manageable. Which, when there are two of them is always a plus. Of course that would nip the whole Andre thing in the butt. All it would take was a little...

No. That was evil. Kind of.

"Hmmm....oh. Well, Andre went to get something from Knockturn Alley and Gael is in the Quidditch shop, I think?"

Oh, well of course they wouldn't be in the same spots. That just made things...difficult, who to go chasing after?

"He already got that broom," Leon grumped a little. He was still sore from time to time that Gael had made the team and he hadn't. There was really something unfair about that. "You know he won't wait until out birthday to use it."

Maybe Uncle Andre was finding them something cool for their birthday.

The grumping did not go unnoticed by Ren who thought this might be a good time to spend a bit of one on one time with Leon.

"What do you say we wait them out in the ice cream shop?"

He'd already had ice cream with Janis, buuut it wasn't like he was going to get fat. Or at least he was sure he wasn't going to get fat.

"Sure," he smiled before holding the shop door open for her. "The flavour of the say is bubbles," he announced, though with a bit of a sad face. Bubbles didn't really taste like much of anything, and after awhile you started to burp actual bubbles. He never did find that much fun.
