Car

My car stopped shifting on Saturday, the odometer and the spedometer were also not working right and the "check engine" light went on. So we dropped it off at a mechanic on Sunday. I was just informed that the only thing broken in my car is a sensor. This was, I thought, good news, since the car hasn't been shifting right. Then the mechanic told me the sensor is in the middle of the transmission and the whole transmission will have to be rebuilt in order to fix it. $1800. There is no way we can afford that, as Tim is only working part time and we are struggling as it is. I don't see how we can afford another car, either. Does anyone know a mechanic that does CHEAP transmissions? It is 2002 Chevy Cavalier LS. Any help or even good thought/prayers would be appreciated.

UPDATE: At this point, it seems the mechanic we took it to doesn't do transmissions so he called another transmission shop to get a quote. He never did say what part needed to be replaced, so we picked up the car and took it to Auto Zone to get the code read. According to them, there are a couple of different sensors that could cause this code. So my husband is going to try to change out the easier ones tomorrow on his own. Keep your fingers crossed for me that it works and fixes the problem. Thanks.
