The corn fields to his sides slowly gave way to plain, flat land. Speedometer stayed steady at 90mph and ate up everything around him. Day gave way to night gave way to day.
"where will you go"
"anywhere but here"
Nothing left but to go. Nothing to keep him and nowhere to go.
He idly fiddled with the ring on his right hand.

For the life of him he couldn't remember where he got it. He touched the necklace he wore. Conversely he remembered in great detail how he'd gotten that. He took a drink of whiskey from his flask to kill that memory before it settled in.
"Gin"
"You're not planning on drinking and driving, are you son?"
"No sir."
But no one knew him now. Maybe no one cared to or maybe he didn't care to be known. The point was still the same. Utterly alone. And for what? He took another swig and as it settled in his empty stomach he gave a smile. It was like a pyre he could just feed memories into. He drove on...
