Tease

Having a tease for an editor is just ... depressing really.

Zach Braff, from "Garden State" and "Scrubs fame", is releasing a new movie in mid-September, "The Last Kiss." Braff was slated next week to do phone interviews for college newspapers and my editor gave me the assignment because I'm his go-to guy, the guy who can do basically any assignment and get something good out of it. But that wasn't the case this time. Another writer, who is basically a crappy movie reviewer, was originally set to do the interview with Braff; but said writer is in NYC -- while school is in session -- to work on his documentary. So when did the go-to guy become second-rated to a guy who gives away the entire plot twists of movies in his reviews?

I got my hopes up unfortunately. I was getting ready for the interview -- research, reading press kits, etc. -- when my editor took away the assignment from me. Turns out that my editor got the dates switched and Crappy Reviewer will be in town to do the interview with Braff. My only consolation prize is to review the movie when it comes out in mid-September.

Grated, I might be a little flaky on deadlines (always in, but like an hour late) but when did I become second-rate to someone else? I'm not mad that I'm not doing the interview; I'm annoyed by the fact that I haven't done any "fun" Life & Arts articles. Both of my beats -- Creative Writing Dept and School of Theatre -- aren't doing anything until October and the assignments that I have been given have been very high-brow, if not serious, material: AIDS play, Houston Symphony, Architecture preview and such. A main reason why I wanted to do be a Life & Arts writer was the fact that I would be able to do cool stuff in my young age. I know not everything in Life & Arts would be fun for me, but a sprinkle of personal enjoyment was expected when I took on this job. Funny how I'm my Life & Arts go-to guy, and I bend over backwards to help my editor constantly, but it seems that he hasn't done anything out for me: try to get me into shows or events that he knows I will enjoy. He's done that for his other senior staffers who only occasionally write for the paper.

I guess it's just jealousy that I'm feeling toward Crappy Reviewer because he's doing work and something fun.
