Apple Recalls iPhone Power Adapters

Apple today admitted that an ultra-compact USB power adapter, shipping with the iPhone 3G, poses a safety threat. The company says that under certain circumstances the metal prongs can break off in the power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. Although Apple claims that only a small number of adapters are affected, the company is nevertheless allowing customers to exchange them for a new, redesigned version.
Vulnerable adapters have been sold in the US, Canada, Japan and Mexico, as well as several Latin-American countries. To claim a replacement people must determine whether their adapter is one of the models at risk, identified by he lack of a green dot, and then contact Apple via the web or through one of its retail stores. The replacements are due October 10th; in the meantime, the company recommends charging via the normal sync cable, a standard-sized adapter, or a car charger.
