Okay, first, lemme just say I LOVE YOU GUYS. So far, we have raised $1,456.77 for the Aids Committee of Toronto. Wow!!!!! THANK YOU.
Next, Severina's Photo Essay Part Two. In which I drag my friend Amy around the city to take photos, and sometimes make her pose. Friends are good. :)
Part Two, the Downtown Core: Once the thriving centre of the city, our downtown has been somewhat eclipsed by the lure of the suburbs. Still, it's a pretty area with a lot of character.
Above two photos: A couple of views of King Street. This major artery runs through the entire city without a break (and probably continues on, for all I know. I am geographically challenged.) Hanging baskets add some colour...
Above: ... as do flowers planted in boxes and along the boulevard.
Above: Amy gets funky with one of the city "doors". Okay, I'll be honest. I have NO IDEA what is up with these things. They started showing up a couple of years ago, some kind of art project I guess. Other cities have, like, giant pigs or cows or stuff scattered around, and local artists paint them. We have... doors. Thank goodness Amy was there to liven up the shot. ;)
Above: Created in 1893, this bronzed statue of former Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald was moved to Gore Park, a two block green space/median that serves as a central bus hub to link the upper and lower cities, in 1907. It's former location was causing traffic accidents!
Above: Most everyone ignores the large "Don't Feed The Pigeons" signs. They're very friendly!
Above: The Gore Park Fountain. It was a fixture in the park for years, until a misguided city council decided to tear it down and pave over the green spaces in the early '80's. Protests began almost immediately, and a group of local businessmen raised the money to restore the fountain in 1986. Our green spaces came back, too. Take that, City Hall!
Above: Our arena, Copps Coliseum, home of our NHL team... oh wait. WE DON'T HAVE AN NHL TEAM. :( The arena was built around '84 to support our bid for an NHL franchise. Still waiting. Copps is the home of the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs, though.
Things I know about the Bulldogs:
1. They play hockey.
Above: Banner advertising our CFL's Hamilton Tiger Cats. I took this one two nights ago when I realized I wasn't going to have time to get around and show you all the things in Hamilton that I wanted to, including Dundurn Castle and Whitehern and, yes, the Ticats.
Things I know about the Hamilton Ticats:
1. They play football.
2. Their colours are yellow and black.
3. Their fans rallying cry is "Oskee Wee Wee, Oskee Wa Wa, Holy Mackinaw, Tigers, EAT 'EM RAW."
4. They have a long standing rivalry with the Toronto Argonauts. Argo fans rallying cry is "Aaaaarrrrrgggggos!" to which Ticat fans invariably add "Suuuuuuuuuuck." Football fans are so mature.
