From my research for my psychology paper (due Thursday, approx. 6 p.m.)
Weinberg, Thomas and G. W. Levi Kamel. S and M: Studies in Sadomasochism. New York: Prometheus Books, 1983.
"The sexual connection between pleasure and pain may well be more biological than psychological or cultural. During the last decade, a mysterious group of internally manufactured, opiate-like substances called "endorphins" has been identified and isolated. Like their synthetically created analogues, the narcotics (heroin, morphine, and their derivatives), the endorphins effect an indifference to physical and mental suffering, and a profound sense of well-being. These substances are released in the brain and throughout the central nervous system in response to various stresses and noxious or painful stimuli. They are believed to be the mechanism responsible for pain relief in acupuncture and may be what stimulates the ecstasies so often described by religious flagellants and martyrs. . . Endorphins have recently been discovered to be addictive . . . Pain, in other words, is possibly a mechanism of addiction to pleasure" (53).
Yes, outdated (the recent discovery of mysterious little thingies called endorphins), but nifty all the same. Laws me! An actually interesting research project!
