~ FREAKISH! Chapter 28B: Time Travel
“You have to come tonight.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s a big party.”
Sakito frowned, it was his birthday but for the first time in his twenty years of life, every single person he knew seemed to forget that it was his birthday. His family, of course, was an exceptional, and Ni~Ya left him a message on his cell phone, but other than the people mentioned, no one remembered about his birthday.
Sakito was not sure if Ruka knew today was his birthday, he never told Ruka about it though and it would be funny to tell him now, the reason why Ruka called him was to take him to a club opening party, something Sakito was not fond of.
“Come on, I’m running out of dates, you better come and be my date for the night”, Ruka insisted.
Sakito chuckled, “I’m sure you got plenty of dates lining up, Ruka-kun! I don’t feel like going out tonight, so I’ll have to pass”, truthfully Sakito would rather spend his birthday alone than dancing the night away in a crowded club.
But Ruka kept insisting, Sakito was a bit surprised at Ruka’s sudden change, Ruka never forced himself to Sakito, he knew Sakito didn’t like clubbing or those kind of night activities. He must be desperate, Sakito concluded.
“Fine, what time are you picking me?” Sakito finally gave up, he’ll spend his birthday alone next year. Sakito’s first thought was Ruka would pick him up, but it was not what Ruka had in mind.
“I have to do something before the party so do you mind to meet me at the club around ten o’clock?”
“What?” Sakito was about to cancel the so called date, not only he was supposed to go to a place he didn’t like, he was expected to go there alone.
“I’ll drive you home afterwards, but I got an appointment somewhere else, that way we’ll be late and -”
“I won’t come.”
“You’ve promised you’re coming! You can’t break your promise like that!” talking about a boy throwing tantrums … Sakito started to compare Ruka to Ni~Ya and decided both were the same when it came to childish stubbornness.
In the end, Ruka successfully made Sakito felt guilty and agreed to come, he couldn’t help himself for feeling used at Ruka’s insistence though …
Sakito looked around his small room, he should be getting dressed for the night since it was almost nine and the club where he was supposed to meet Ruka, Velfarre, was located across the town so he would need an extra forty minutes by the public transport.
Sakito quickly put on a black shirt and a matching pair of tight jeans, he didn’t want to dress too flashy since his parents were just outside the door. He put on his ear rings and a plain necklace
He took his coat and put it on to hide the clothes he wore, although he chose the most less revealing clubbing clothes he had on his closet, he knew his parents wouldn’t think so.
Sakito was just stepping out of the room as he heard his father asking, “Where are you going in this hour?!”
Sakito stopped to meet his father’s eyes, “Well it’s my birthday and … I’m going out to meet some friends”, he lied.
His father was about to say something about Sakito meeting his friends but Sakito’s mother cut his father, “It’s his birthday, let him go and have fun with his friends.”
“You can go but don’t let me catch you hanging out with your queer friends or I’ll kick you out of the house for sure!” his father threatened.
Sakito looked down and gave a small nod, ”Bye Kaa-san … Tou-san”, he turned and left the apartment.
**
The club was fully packed as usual, Sakito saw no signs of an opening night at the entrance, it seemed like the night was just an ordinary night at the club with no celebration. Sakito gave his jacket and bag to the concierge before looking for Ruka.
After fifteen minutes and no signs of Ruka, Sakito decided to give Ruka a call in case his friend forgot about their appointment.
However, before Sakito managed to dial Ruka’s phone on his cell phone, someone approached him and called out his name.
“You’re Sakito, right?”
Sakito looked at the man, he was probably not much younger than Sakito, despite his height. He didn’t know how the stranger knew his name but he hoped this was not one of the club’s pervert. Sakito nodded in reply and the man grinned.
“I’m Yomi, Ruka’s friend, he told me to pick you, he’s at the private room.”
Sakito followed Yomi to the private room, expecting Ruka to be there partying with his friends, but he was wrong.
The moment he opened the door, lights burst brightly and everybody shouted, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”
Sakito was taken a back for a second, he hadn’t expected Ruka to remember the day, he never told Ruka about his birthday after all …
To his surprise, he saw his friends in the room, friends he never told Ruka about. There was Hitsugi, Sakito had no idea how Ruka found Hitsugi’s number and most of all, how did Ruka knew that he was friends with Hitsugi?
Of course there were Sakito’s classmates and friends from work, they all looked at him expectantly.
“Aren’t you surprised?”
Sakito’s eyes widened, “How did you …? Ruka?”
“If you ask me if I’ve been stalking you the answer is no”, Ruka grinned.
“Saki-chan! Blow the candles!” Ayumi cheered.
“Make a wish!” someone added.
Ruka smiled as he held the cake to Sakito, it was a small strawberry cake with pink icing and 20 candles on top. Sakito took a deep breath and blew.
“Yah! Since the birthday boy had blown the candles, I have one question for him!” Ruka announced.
“What?”
With everybody around them looking at him with knowing smile, Sakito couldn’t stop himself from feeling nervous.
“Sakito, will you marry me?”
The question barely registered on Sakito’s mind, it took him a couple of seconds to realize what was going on and when it came to his senses, Sakito saw Ruka was down on his knees with a
ring presented to him.
Just like in the movies.
“Sakito? Say something!” someone brought Sakito’s senses returned to the present time.
“Is this some kind of a prank?” he whispered to Ruka, blushing.
“Of course not”, Ruka replied, “Just say yes if you wanna marry me so I don’t have to embarrass myself more in front of everybody.”
“I … I do”, Sakito finally answered.
Ruka didn’t waste any time to sweep Sakito off his feet and kissed him.
Sakito had imagined Ruka to be a rough kisser, judging from the way he looked. But he was surprised to find their first kiss was sweet and slow, just like in the romantic movies. The kind of kiss Sakito never had, but it melted him on the spot.
“Hey! Can we start the party now?!” Yomi cut their kiss with a shout.
Ruka pulled back, leaving Sakito breathless and smirked.
**
The party ended around three o’clock in the morning, Sakito thought about getting home but Ayumi giggled when he said that he was going home.
“Of course you can’t! You are engaged!”
Sakito smiled sheepishly, it was true, now he was engaged to Ruka. He didn’t think of it too seriously, his first thought was it was Ruka’s way of expressing his feeling, he was a fan of romantic movies after all, and the first thing Sakito thought was “Will you marry me”, was just Ruka’s way of saying “I like you, stick with me.”
It was not like they could get marry this fast after all, although they had knew each others for a couple of months and Sakito was sure Ruka was a nice guy despite his hectic partying habit, Ruka still had another two years before he could finish university and Sakito doubted Ruka was serious about getting married.
“Sakito! Let’s go!”
Sakito thought they were going home but Ruka grinned, “We’re going to the district office to register our marriage!”
Sakito let Ruka led him to the car as he was still dumbfounded. Was Ruka drunk? Of course he proposed to Sakito earlier but even if they were going to get married, at least he would need to ask his parents first!
“Ruka, are … are you serious?!” it was the first question Sakito mustered to ask as the car left the parking lot.
“What do you mean am I serious? I am! We’re getting married!” Ruka answered triumphantly.
“Are you crazy? We … I …” Sakito was almost lost of all words.
“Didn’t you say that you’ll marry me?”
“I … did, but …”
“So there’s no difference whether it’s now or next year?”
Sakito was not sure whether it was his alcohol intoxicated mind or a part of his heart who labored a soft spot for Ruka that made him to take the crazy decision to get married this day.
Their friends were packed in several other cars, all of them looked happy and excited at their wedding. Among them were Hitsugi, Yomi, Ayumi and about ten other people, most of them were Ruka’s friends.
Ruka smiled reassuringly at him as the car parked outside the district office, squeezing Sakito’s hand and whispered, “I am not drunk, we’re getting married for sure.”
Sakito nodded.
“Saki-chan, will you really marry me now?”
Sakito nodded, “Yes.”
Yomi knocked on the car’s door, “We’re here! Come on! Let’s start!!”
Ruka turned off the engine, “Let’s go Saki-chan!” he planted a kiss on Sakito’s lips, a small, light kiss.
The district office just opened a couple of minutes a go, some officers were sweeping the floor, even the night lights were just turned off before the small group entered the front door.
As they passed the large glass door, Sakito took the time to check on his appearance. For a guy who just spent the night partying, he didn’t look too bad, but for someone who was going to get marry, he looked like he could use some help.
“You look great Sakito, don’t worry”, Ruka held his hand as they walked into the office.
“Ruka, will you at least give Sakito a chance to powder up a bit?” Ayumi pulled Sakito’s hand, “Come on, Yomi is talking to the officer, you two are going to be legally married in a short time, but you should look your best Saki-chan!”
Sakito let himself being powdered by Ayumi and she helped him to straighten up a bit.
“You look so good, Saki-chan! I’m so proud of you”, she hugged him, “I wish you all the best with Ruka, I know you’ve made a good decision, he’s really in love with you.”
Sakito smiled at the comment, “You think so?”
“He’s crazy about you, honey, don’t think twice!”
She gave Sakito a tight hug, as she pulled away, Sakito could see her single tear, “I wish you both all the best.”
“Thank you Ayumi”, Sakito replied.
Yomi called for the officer and gathered the needed forms, soon Sakito found himself being hauled to a room where Ruka was waiting.
“Are you sure you wanna do this?” Ruka whispered in Sakito’s ear, “You can’t get rid of me once we’re legally married.”
Sakito thought for a minute, it was indeed a big decision. But he had made up his mind. He knew Ruka was a good guy and for once, he believed his own instinct telling him to trust Ruka.
“I said I do didn’t I?” Sakito gave a small smile as his answer.
**
Three hours later, Sakito and Ruka were finally alone in Ruka’s car. Their wedding party was held in a big restaurant, courtesy to HeeSun-sshi who decided to give them a wedding gift, only some close friends came, everything was full of unexpected surprise and spontaneous.
“Should we tell your parents now?” Ruka asked as they entered the car.
“I … I think so”, Sakito answered, not so sure.
The drive to Sakito’s house was faster than he expected. He was not expecting his parents to be happy with his marriage but still, his father might not be thrilled with his choice.
“Ruka …” Sakito said, stopping his newly wedded husband, “My family … my father … when I said he’s not used to my lifestyle … I meant to say that …” Ruka waited for Sakito to find the right words patiently, “He … I got the feeling that he … I … he’ll hate the idea of his son getting married to another man.”
Ruka squeezed his hand and smiled reassuringly, “At least tell your family about it, I’ll go with you.”
Somehow, Ruka’s decision to go with him to face his family helped Sakito to find more courage. He unlocked the door and stepped into the apartment bravely, Ruka’s hand in his hand.
**
One hour later, they ran out of the apartment building with childish smile on each of their faces. Ruka carried a big suitcase while Sakito’s arms were holding a carton box and a smaller bag which contained his belongings.
“Shall we go home to our love nest?” Ruka teased Sakito as he closed the door of his car.
Sakito giggled at the corny line, “Shut up and just drive”, he said back, but a smile was still plastered on his face.
As the car moved through the crowded streets of Tokyo, Sakito’s mind played the scenes back.
His father was not happy at all for his marriage, Sakito had never seen his father this angry before. He was thankful that Ruka stayed with him the whole time and although he didn’t expect it, Ruka knew how to place himself to his father’s anger.
So after almost an hour of pointless insulting, which Sakito could calmly accept, with Ruka on his side, Sakito finally packed his stuff as Ruka waited outside to not enraged Sakito’s father too much.
He didn’t have much things, which helped when he was packing, just some clothes and jackets, text books for school, shoes and a couple of other things, all of them he could pack into a large suitcase and some boxes neatly. His brother was not home, which lessened the trouble.
But what surprised him was his mother.
“Sakito”, his mother called out just in time before Sakito closed the bag, “Good luck with your new life, I saw your husband, he seems like a nice man and I hope he will take a good care of you.”
It was the only closest thing to a blessing from his parents Sakito received for his marriage and it made him smile.
Although it was the only thing he could get from his parents, Sakito faced his new life with Ruka with a smile.
**
PRESENT TIME
The day passed and although Sakito didn’t say anything, Ruka knew his husband was going to see his father at the hospital. Despite what his father said to him in the past, Ruka knew Sakito missed his family, Sakito always said to Ruka that he didn’t care if they would never get his parents’ blessings for their marriage but Ruka knew it mattered a lot for Sakito.
Ruka just shrugged it off, he couldn’t even remember himself as a part of a family, for as long as he could remember he only had a grandmother who took care of him since he was very young. His mother died a long time a go and his father decided to burry himself under his work load, leaving small Ruka with his grandmother’s care. The old woman died when Ruka was only thirteen and since thirteen was a good age to start boarding school … that was where Ruka was sent.
As soon as he could live on his own, Ruka decided to get his own place. His father supported his tuition fee although that was all he did. Ruka was used to work for his own, doing several part time job and sometimes partying.
Ruka stood up and closed the window, the autumn breeze was getting too cold for the room. Today was Sakito’s day off and he only had a class in the afternoon, he didn’t have to work either, and normally they would spend the day together, cuddling or just watching something on TV.
He was about to throw himself to the sofa again and start flipping through the channels when Sakito came home. He shed his shoes aside and put his jacket on the hanger.
“How was it?” Ruka asked.
Sakito shrugged, “Not so good … they’ll have to operate him soon and he’s really sick he barely could move.”
“Did you talk to him?”
Sakito sat on the sofa, letting Ruka’s strong arms coiled around him, “He asked me …”
“What?”
“If I ever regretted my decision to leave my family”
“And?”
“I said no”, Sakito said and leaned closer to his husband, “And he asked me if I came to apologize, I told him I haven’t done anything wrong so I am not going to apologize for marrying you.”
A moment of silence, Sakito was trying to compose his feelings.
“Then I told him that I went to check on him because he’s sick, I worried about him because he’s my dad and I only got one dad in my life … He looked like he was going to argue but he was too weak … I didn’t stay there long, I left after a few minutes.”
Ruka squeezed the older boy’s hand in his larger hand, he didn’t know what to say, never actually having his dad around him since childhood made him wonder why Sakito bothered to see his dad after what happened that day when they came to tell Sakito’s parents about their marriage. Ruka could still remember all the insulting words he said and if the man was not the father of Sakito, his Sakito, Ruka was sure he could had killed him.
“Ruka-kun …”
“Hn?”
“I will take a day off tomorrow, I’m going to see him again after school before his operation, I think he’ll soften up a bit”, Sakito smiled softly.
“Do you want me to come with you?’ Ruka offered.
Sakito shook his head, “I’ll be just fine on my own, a man gotta do what a man got to do right?”
Ruka chuckled, “Yeah right … wifey~”
Sakito smiled at the comment, their fingers entwined together and a pair of similar rings adorned their fingers.
[Would you marry me
Would you spend my days with me
Through hardships and difficulties, I do
I’ll always be there, I do
Through our many days together, I do
I’ll be thankful every day, My love
Accept this shining ring in my hand
That I’ve prepared from awhile back
With the same feelings today
I’ll remember the promise made right now]
