So I go to Blockbuster today to get a movie for Julia and I to watch, and they ask me for an ID when I didn't have my card with me. An ID? Since when have you needed an ID to rent a video when you can rattle off the phone number, names of everyone on the account, and the last three videoes you returned? What the hell? I wanted to ask the guy if this was in response to the increasing number of people who are convinced that if you can't produce a picture ID immediately you must be a terrorist or if they really do lose a company-breaking number of Harriet the Spy videos to people who stole phone numbers to use an account. But of course he was just a random peon, and so I didn't. But seriously. I don't want to have to show my driver's license to the damned Blockbuster clerk. There's as much security in one of their little cards as there is in my knowing my phone number. So I couldn't rent a video, now I'm annoyed, and what was the point? Is Blockbuster really thinking that their customers are going to be impressed with their higher levels of security? Who RUNS these places?
