If your transmission is still good, you could also try to sell it on Craigslist for parts. My son's Saturn Vue is dead due to an electrical short that killed the main computer, but the new clutch, catalytic converter and transmission are worth quite a bit so we are going to try that route.
I might see if I can find a buyer for the whole car on craigslist, with the stipulation that they have to tow it away. But unfortunately, selling individual parts isn't really an option. I have no way of taking the car apart, and - even if I did have the appropriate tools - we're not allowed to do anything more than fix flat tires in the apartment parking lot.
Sorry, I didn't clarify. Put the whole car up for sale as a 'parts' vehicle. whomever buys it has to take the whole thing. You just list all of the 'new' parts that have been installed and the condition of the transmission. My Vue's transmission isn't made anymore and so it has enough value that one of the smaller independent auto shops around here might buy the vehicle for the usable parts.
I'm going to give it a try, but I'm not sure how well it will work considering the age of my car. Especially since it doesn't really have a lot of "new" parts - a lot of things in it are the originals, which makes it impressive that it's lasted this long.
Forgetting about the suckiness of having to deal with this now and the potential financial implications - 21 years is a fracking good run! They don't quite make cars like that anymore.

Otherwise, well, there's always the junkyard.

I'm definitely happy with the number of years that I got out of her. I just wish that she'd lasted another few months.
