What book did you give up on that you regret giving up on?

I love Tolkien's world, but I loathe his writing style. The only way I managed to get through any of his books was discovering the wonderful world of audiobooks.
The Hobbit is a major case of 'what could've been.' If it was only a stand-alone bedtime story, it might be okay, but as a part of the same universe as LotR or the Silmarillion, it is a huge disappointment.
And given how much I love Bilbo and can't stand Frodo, it really irked me for a long time that Bilbo got so badly shortchanged.
To this day, if I see any variation of 'but that's a story for another time...' in a book, it sets my teeth on edge.
I'm so glad PJ did what JRRT never got around to doing: fleshing the story out and finally giving Bilbo the adventure he deserved.
