I ended up talking myself into going to V's house last night before it was all said and done, although I didn't go until later in the evening than she'd originally asked me to come. (A few hours with people I can handle better than a lot of hours with people.) It went well, for the most part.
They'd boiled some eggs for a salad but hadn't made it in the end, so they had a dozen boiled eggs and nothing to do with them. So I dug through their pantry to see what I could scrape together and made a batch of deviled eggs that turned out surprisingly well, considering I was making things up as I went since they didn't have about half the things I usually use to make them. Add that to the cookie pizza and ice cream that I made last I was there, and I think that I've won her parents over.
There were only four people there that I didn't know, so it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. (Apparently several people backed out at the last minute.) There was a lot of food, and nobody minded when V and I put in a movie and curled up on the sofa to watch it.
Oh, and the cider that I brought was a hit!
Amusing story time: I was out and about running errands yesterday morning, and I stopped at Gilly's to get my growler filled since they were having a special for club members. (They have a deal where you pay a small fee and, for the next year, you get half price growler fills on Sundays and select holidays. I don't use it very much, but it's well worth the money even if you don't use it often so I went ahead and paid the fee.)
Last year, the weather was pretty bad on New Years Eve, so they had almost no business; since they base staffing on what it was like the previous year, they didn't have too many people working. So, of course, they were slammed. It was one of the regular guys behind the bar, and he was running around quite a bit. I asked him to fill my growler with
Tröegs Mad Elf whenever he had a chance (and not to rush on my behalf, because it was me and I didn't have anywhere else to be), since that was the best deal they had considering taste, price, and alcohol content.
Anyway, after he finished filling the growler, he walked over to me with an extremely sheepish look on his face. The type of look that meant something was very much up. "So Lynn," he said. "On the positive side, I'm not going to charge you for your growler fill."
Now, they've been known to not ring up a beer or two on my check, but a $14 growler fill? They only comp that much on very rare occasions, like the time I apparently brought in a ton of business for them from a Yelp review and the owner comped my entire check. I narrowed my eyes. "You filled it up with the wrong thing, didn't you?" I asked him.
He apparently filled it with Southern Tier's DeMunck's Cider, which was directly below the one I'd asked for. (I'm still not certain how he managed to do it, considering Mad Elf was the only beer on a tap yesterday that had a specialty handle, but he was pretty busy.) Southern Tier usually makes good drinks, and they've definitely given me lots of free stuff over the years, so I just shrugged and took the one that he'd given me.
And, hey, it was surprisingly yummy and went over well with everyone at V's place. So win/win?
