Talking Meme: Day #27

From anonymous: You have the chance to travel to an alternate universe where one of your canons went in a completely different direction than it did in this universe. What's the canon? And what are the differences?

Ooh, this is a good one. A hard one, because it's really difficult to narrow it down, but still. A good one.

I'm going to go with ( Read more... )

I agree almost 100% (except for Severus who is my favorite character and I really wouldn't want to change him unless it came about because Dumbledore actually took Black to task for his attempted murder of Severus and his betrayal of Lupin).

I'm not really sure having muggleborns in Slytherin before the last war would work due to the Founder's original prejudice, however, I definitely would love to see a more diverse portrayal among them, since there's no way all of them would be 'bad' - case in point: Severus.

I absolutely HATE the way she did the Remus/Tonks thing. I went from loving Tonks in Book 5 to not being able to stand her in Book 6. I also didn't like the way they pretty much just ended up canon fodder to pad the butcher's bill.

In my version either Fred would live or George would die, too. You don't separate twins, dammit!

Hedwig would also live.

I'd also really rather that Harry actually BE the hero rather than having everyone around him actually do the work/make the sacrifices and he get all the credit (he's too much like Frodo for my taste).

Am I the only one who thought the way the book ended and jumped to the epilogue that Jo just got tired of writing and said 'screw it, I'll just toss on a happily ever after and call it a day?'

I adored Snape's character when I was younger, but after I actually studied to be a teacher in university? A lot of his actions as a teacher started to make me feel extremely uncomfortable, because almost everything he does are on the list of things that you're told, up front, if you have them? Teaching might not be the field for you.

And all of your additions to my list are A+. :D

LOL I can certainly understand your viewpoint and I agree dear Severus is not a good teacher.

However, to me, it simply illustrates how much his teaching at Hogwarts is not really by choice. He basically sold his soul to Dumbledore as much as he did to Voldemort (more, really, since Dumbledore played off his love for Lily and guilt over her death).

Also there's so much about his actions that are geared toward keeping up his appearances in front of the children of Death Eaters, it makes me wonder how good/bad he would actually be if he didn't have to keep up his role as double (or is it triple? lol) agent.

Everything's shown through Harry's eyes which skews things, as well, because he brings out the worst in Severus, given he's such a sore point: looking like one of his chief tormentors; having the same eyes as his mother, who Severus loved; living because Lily sacrificed herself, etc.

Severus is really the only reason I read all the books, because he's such a dichotomy: nasty, petty and insecure, yet protective and loyal to a fault. I've never had so much fun exploring all of a character's layers before. LOL

Jo drives me nuts, because she made this character with so many facets (and he's really the only character in the books I find truly 3-dimensional), yet by a lot of her disparaging remarks over the years, it's clear she never really appreciated how great of a character she had created.
