Oh, the memories...

Since my grandmother died in 2010, her house has been sold three times. Out of curiosity, I did some googling a little while ago, and there are a ton of pictures of it available on its Zillow listing.

It's... really weird to look at those pictures, to be honest.

The red roof is new, something added by one of the new owners since 2010. When I was growing up, it was black. Always.

Also, there are some trees missing. There used to be several more in the yard itself. There was a cherry tree, and a pear tree, and a dogwood, and... wow. So many are gone.

The tables and the hideous, pretty uncomfortable sofa? Were my grandparents'. I assume that they must not have sold in the estate sale. There used to be... two, I think? matching chairs that sat in that room with it. The piano should be sitting in front of that back window. This piano, if I'm not mistaken; it might have been a 1869 instead of an 1868, but the appearance is definitely very close. It went to my uncle M and my aunt C; if neither of their daughters don't want it, I'm definitely going to ask that it be left to me.

Never mind. There's one of the chairs. Also, the fireplace wasn't black when Granny and Grandaddy lived there. It might have been, once upon a time, but it was... faded. I don't remember the exact color, but it wasn't that dark.

This was the dining room, and the wood wasn't nearly so... noticeable. The walls were painted, I think? Although the wood floor was showing. It just wasn't so cleaned up. There was a giant upright freezer in the left corner, and then a big wood table that would seat eight adults.

This was my grandparents' bedroom. Where the brick wall is, that was where the wood heater was until... the late 90s, I think? There was also bricks on the floor under that part of the room. When they upgraded to central heating around 1998 or so, they pulled up the bricks. And that's where Granny kept her computer.

Yeah, that righthand corner? Would have been my grandparents' bed. It was tiny, at least for two people. I swear that it wasn't even a full size.

Wow. The kitchen looks so different. All of the white? Was plain wood when my grandparents lived there. And there was a round table there, with a glass top, where the four grandkids always ate during family get-togethers. Even near the end, when all but the youngest of us were adults.

So. Much. White. I very much prefer the natural wood.

This was the den, when I was growing up. Once again, the white is new. It was plain wood back in the day.

(I'm pretty sure that's my grandparents' air condition. The thing barely worked even when Granny was alive; I don't know why they kept it.) Where the desk is? That's where the TV used to be. There was an ugly, comfortable-as-hell old sofa sitting under the air conditioner. In front of the bar, there was a... wooden rocking chair? Yeah, a wooden rocking chair. And another one over to the righthand side of the room, near the bathroom door. Another wooden rocking chair. Underneath where Granddaddy's rifle rack used to hang.

... and that's the bathroom, which is about to make me cry. Fuck.

No, you see, they completely updated their bathroom in fall 2008. They finished in October. Granny had her stroke in November.

The toilet? Used to be directly under the window, facing the other way. The sink was... gods, I'm having to think. I shouldn't have to think. It was right inside the bathroom door, in front of the shower (which used to be a traditional bathtub; they added the solely shower, with seats inside, during the remodel because Granny and Granddaddy were starting to have issues).

This was the spare bedroom. I slept here, every time I stayed with them. The green is new; back in the day, it was plain wood.

Once again, plain wood. The door on the lefthand side of the page is a closet. The middle door leads to my grandparents' bedroom, while the one on the far right leads to the den. There was a dresser between the lefthand door and the middle one, and Granddaddy kept his tool cabinet between the middle door and the righthand one. There was a table, to the right of the righthand door. And beside that was a bed.

Oh gods, the attic. The white is very much new. It was... wallpapered, for the most part, when I was growing up. With some light blue paint, on the doorframes and the... whatever the part that goes around, next to the floor, is called. And the bed (a different bed, because the frame was metal not wood -- I think that's the frame from the spare bedroom downstairs?) was against the other wall, with a blue chest at its foot.

Like... well, like this:

(Yes, that's baby!me. Shush.)

And this is the closet in the attic, which is... a lot more empty that I remember it. There was a bed along the far wall, and then it was filled with tons of junk. Um, there was a dresser full of old clothes and sheets and such. A giant shelf of old toys. A container full of, like, twenty pillows. Things like that.

There used to be a (falling down) garage that could be seen on the lefthand side of where this image is focused on.

Well, at least one thing hasn't changed.

Actually, no. The red roof is new. As is the white paint.
