From
thievinghippo: Favorite non-squad member characters [in Mass Effect]?
Short answer: all of them!
Much, much, much longer answer:
Oh, Mass Effect. ♥ The various squad members (all of whom I adore) tend to get quite a bit of love from me, but I don't talk as much about the various non-squad members as often. Which is something that I'm thrilled to rectify.
However, for the sake of time, I'm narrowing it down to ten. (Which was ridiculously difficult, I have to say.)
Anderson! I mean, really, he's voiced by Keith David. That in itself is a reason to love him. No matter how you interpret his relationship with Shepard -- whether it be as a father or as a mentor or as strictly a commanding officer (at least in ME1), a longtime friend/colleague/acquaintance or a complete stranger in ME1 -- he's an awesome character. And I think it's seriously understated just how much he had to have done during the events of ME3, spending all that time stuck on Earth and fighting a guerrilla war that you know he knew he couldn't win.
Aria! What? How can you not love Aria? I mean, sometimes I love to hate her, but still. She's a kickass criminal queen who makes no apologies whatsoever for who she is and what she does.
Emily Wong! Go and take a look at
this post. The end.
Joker! ♥ I know that there have to be people out there who don't like Joker, but please don't let me know if you're one of them. Is he a smartass who thinks he's the best thing in the universe? Hell, yeah. But he's also a gifted military officer who didn't let his disability stop him from doing what he loved and one of the most loyal friends basically any version of Shepard can have.
Dr. Chakwas! Oh Karin, love of my heart. I adore her friendship with Shepard, not to mention the rest of the longtime crew members. She's such an amazing character: lifelong military, her family the one she chose instead of the one she was born with, great taste in liquor. I'm still bitter that it wasn't possible to romance her (not that it stopped one of my Shepards, at least in fanfiction).
Gabby and Ken! Shush. They count as one person. There's no such thing as Ken without Gabby (and I refuse to acknowledge that the Suicide Mission could ever end in such a way). I love that the two of them essentially turned their backs on their entire military career in order to stick up for what they believed in, and then they did the exact same thing again with Cerberus. If you haven't used it before, I highly recommend the
fairly awesome mod that restores the original recruitment scene for them in ME3. (You can also watch it
here.)
Kelly! So many people in the fandom seem to hate her character, but I have to admit that I love her. I honestly don't know why. Even when I'm playing a very renegade Shepard, it's hard for me to be mean to her, and I have to switch to another playthrough to make up for it every time. She's just so bright and optimistic, no matter what, and even when she's doing the completely wrong thing, she's still trying so hard to do the right thing.
Matriarch Aethyta! Are there really people out there who don't love Liara's foulmouthed, kickass, half-krogan, no holds barred father? Really? What's not to love?
Samantha! Oh, my adorable geeky baby. ♥ I love Sam. And I 'ship her with basically everyone. Shepard. EDI. Ashley. (Take a look at
these fics. Especially the first one. You'll understand.) Tali. Liara. She's adorable, and she's brilliant, and she's a completely and total dork, and-- and-- and how can you not love her?
Steve! I've yet to actually romance him (mainly because none of my M!Shepards have made it to ME3 yet), but several of my F!Shepards have made friends with him. And, oh, do I adore him. He starts out the game as a widower who just recently lost his husband, working himself to the bone in an attempt to forget everything that he's lost. But then he slowly makes his peace, and... oh, Steve. ♥
For the record? Just a few months ago, Kal'Reegar would have been on this list. Adam Baldwin's complete inability not to be a total asshole, however, has seriously colored my view of the character. Which is sad for me, because I really liked the character. :-(
