Talking Meme: Day #17

nenya_kanadka: Advantages and disadvantages of Livejournal/Dreamwidth as a fannish platform.

So, here's the thing, I freely admit that I prefer DW/LJ as a fannish platform over message boards, mailing lists, Tumblr, and/or Twitter. It's much easier to have a conversation with people when you can response directly to their comments/comment threads; you don't have to specify that you're responding to so-and-so because it's obvious from where you're commenting that's what you're doing.

As long as people post to the appropriate communities, it's fairly easy to find fic/art that you're interested in featuring characters/pairings that you like. It's easy to find people who share interests with you and follow them, and filters (depending on how they're used) can block topics you're not interested in.

The less positive side is that DW/LJ is very much not as active as it used to be. People aren't posting to comms nearly as often, so it's harder to find fanworks about specific things. Less and less people are posting fic and art here; fic's going more on the AO3 (and Tumblr, to some extent, which makes no sense to me because it literally hurts to try to read fic there) while art's going more on Tumblr. And it's harder to find people who share interests with you now that people aren't posting regularly in comms.

Overall? I prefer DW/LJ to older and newer forms of fannish interaction. Sadly, it doesn't look like I'm in the majority, though.
